Varsity hoops teams struggle

¦ Boys go 0-2, while girls notch one victory to go 1-2

Gulf Breeze High School varsity boys’ and girls’ basketball teams are coming off a tough week of action with a cumulative record of 1-4. The girls’ team earned the lone victory – 45-44 at Catholic on Saturday – in its final regular season game of the season.

The Dolphins were one shot away from going 0-5, as the Crusaders’ threepointer as time expired was ruled no good because the clock hit zero before the ball left the shooter’s hand. Cierra Culp hit 5 threepointers in the win, leading the way for GBHS with 17 points.

Lady Dolphins 57,
Tate 62

Gulf Breeze blew its first of two halftime leads, giving up 36 second-half points at Tate in a 62-57 loss. The Lady Dolphins scored 34 in the first half, building an 8- point halftime lead. Despite 18 points from Maggie Mims, GBHS couldn’t keep pace with Tate. Lizzy Hoehn and Hadyn Ilano added 9 points each in the loss.

Milton 34,
Lady Dolphins 25

The Lady Dolphins held Milton to only 8 points in the first half for a 10-8 halftime lead, but were outscored 26-15 in the second half to lose 34-25 in Gulf Breeze on Jan. 24. Mims scored 12 points in the loss, followed by Culp’s 5 and 4 by Ilano and Marissa McDonald.

The Lady Dolphins will take on Bay in the District 1-5A Semifinals on Friday, Feb. 3 at 5:30 p.m. at Rutherford High School in Panama City. Gulf Breeze is the No. 3 seed.

A win will put the Lady Dolphins in the District Championship Game the following night (Feb. 4) at 7 p.m.
