PollBy George, I enjoyed crossing the Delaware, too
One of their valued customers was RCA Victor in Camden, N.J., just across the Delaware River from the studio's location in downtown Philadelphia. I usually took the passenger ferry to deliver his work. There was still a ferry then, even with the nearby Franklin Bridge, because it was then in the hub of industry on both sides of the river. The Delaware River has played a big part in American history. In those days, the ferry docked very near the battleship Olympia, which had been Adm. George Dewey's flagship during the Spanish-American War. It was quite the historic tourist attraction, even featuring brass replicas of the Admiral's footprints on the bridge, and a plaque containing his immortal phrase, "You may fire when ready, Gridley!" The Olympia is still there. Today, on the Camden side of the river, you will also find the battleship New Jersey, which has been berthed there only a few years. The ferry I so enjoyed riding is long gone, as the subway and trains were added to the nearby bridge, and the river flows on with more tourist attractions than heavy industry these days. The RCA Victor building tower is still there, but the building has long been converted to expensive condominiums. I wonder what new memories are being created for others who cross the Delaware today? ¦ Cardiac arrest is the leading cause of death in the U.S. today.
