Ex-Dolphins look to make big splash at Division I schools
      While fall football practice at Gulf Breeze begins next week, some former Dolphins from coast to coast are looking to make a big splash for their respective college teams. Leading the way is Doug Baldwin, who had a breakout season last year as a receiver and punt returner at Stanford. Like coach Jim Harbaugh, Baldwin's entering his third year at the Palo Alto, Calif.

Pfeifler captures first 18-under tennis title
Pfeifler and Kasler take third in USTA National Open Girls' 18s doubles tournament
      Gulf Breeze High junior Jen Pfeifler, playing in her first national tournament in the 18-under age group, won the North Florida Junior Designated 18-under girls singles tournament last month in Tallahassee. Pfeifler, seeded eighth in the 48-player field, lost only seven games in her first three matches.

Local tennis teams to compete in Section/State Championships
      Three Gulf Breeze teams will be competing at The 2009 USTA Florida Section/State Adult League Championships at the Florida Tennis Center in Daytona Beach. The tournament begins this Friday, Aug. 7, and will conclude on Sunday, Aug. 9.

GBHS Dance Team holds annual camp
      Nearly 70 girls from ages 5- 14 participated in the Gulf Breeze High Dance Team camp last week in the gym. The camp was broken down by age groups. The kindergartners and first graders were the Flippers, the second and third graders were GB, the fourth and fifth graders were the Dazzlers and the sixth through eighth graders were the Divas.

More than 1,200 runners/walkers take part in Bushwacker 5K
      More than 1,000 runners and more than 150 walkers took part in the 21st annual Bushwacker 5K run/walk Saturday. The race started in front of the Rec Center and ended near the Sandshaker on Pensacola Beach.

Middle row (from left): Samantha Landfair, Torie Gray, Lauren Harvey and Shannon Kehoe. Back Row: Coach Ryan Davenport, Samantha Webking, Austin Tate and Caitlin Chapman. GBHS finished pool play with 10 games won (out of 15). Spruce Creek, who was the top seed, finished 13-2 (with both losses to GBHS). Gulf Breeze, facing Spruce Creek in the title match, held off three game points before winning 33-31.

Safe hunting is no accident
      With the dog-days of summer upon us, it's hard to think about hunting. But if you're between the ages of 16 and 34, and haven't yet taken the state's hunter safety class - now's just the time to be thinking about it. Many of these classes, offered statewide, fill up fast during hunting season while people scramble to get certified.

Double-ing down to victory
     Photo courtesy of Daniel Filardi Double-ing down to victory The Double Down Fishing Team from Gulf Breeze won the Mobile Big Game Limited Marlin Tournament on Saturday, July 25. Team Double Down won first place Catch and Release and Top Boat by catching a White Marlin on a 30 lb test and Tyler Gaffney was awarded Top Angler for the Tournament. "The Mobile Big Game Fishing Club puts on an excellent Limited Marlin Tournament and I encourage all inboard boats 32 feet and under and any size outboard to fish next July," said Daniel Filardi. Offshore trolling much improved
Current change means clear, blue water
      The currents have finally changed form the northwest and turned up speed from a more southeasterly direction. This means nothing but cleaner water and better fishing for anglers along the Florida panhandle. The waters of the Gulf of Mexico from the shoreline to forty miles offshore are as pretty right now as you will ever see it.
