Fourth of July still worth singing about!

Anticipating all the hoopla of the Fourth of July events ahead reminds me of how much I looked forward each summer to the Fourth of July celebrations "up home."

We always spent the holiday in Lititz, Pa., visiting my cousins. By now, you have read in my columns about this small town outside Lancaster where there were many eagerly anticipated activities for us kids all summer long at Lititz Springs Park.

It was a very large park that featured ballgames, races and, of course, elaborate Fourth of July fireworks each year.

These were not the professional displays we have today, of course. My cousin Dot's father helped with setting them off. He had been a wellknown semi-pro baseball player and was very popular, which might explain how we got such good seats for the show.

As the fireworks drew to a close, each blast became louder and more exciting. It seemed to take a good halfhour to regain our hearing after the finale. Our evening ended in a patriotic blaze of red, white and blue stars that filled the sky to the cheers of hundreds of onlookers of all ages, and a group singing this old song.

I bet you never heard it before, so here it is, as appropriate as ever:

"Shout! I Am an American"

On the street, in the home, in a crowd or alone,

Shout! wherever you may be,

"I am an American, I am, from the heart of me."

Rich or poor, young and old, let this message be told

Shout! wherever you may be, "I am an American, I'm proud of my liberty."

In the factory, in the mill, Through each valley, from each hill

Raise your voice and give America a thrill!

On the farms, in the schools, let's have one set of rules,

Shout! wherever you may be,

"I am an American, I am, ev'ry part of me."

From Alaska's snowy peaks to the Southland's muddy creeks,

Listen in, because America now speaks.

On the farms, in the schools, let's have one set of rules

Shout! wherever you may be "I am an American, I am, ev'ry part of me."

Happy Fourth of July, and hooray for the red, white and blue!

Here are some inspiring quotes from famous persons found in one of my favorite newsmagazines, "The Week."

From Woodrow Wilson: "You are here to enrich the world, and you impoverish yourself if you forget the errand."

From Bill Cosby: "In order to succeed, your desire for success should be greater than your fear of failure."

See you next week!
