SMARTER THAN THE AVERAGE BEAR?

The FWC offers these tips to help decrease the possibility for bears in our area:

¦ Bears are looking for food. If you eliminate the food source, the bears will go away. Food sources include garbage cans, bird feeders, barbecue grills, compost piles and pet food.

¦ Bears can smell food from more than a mile away. If they are rewarded with an easy meal, they learn quickly to return to the same location.

¦ Bears that are not rewarded with an easy meal direct their attention to their natural settings away from humans.

¦ Bears that become used to getting human foods may damage property. They may also lose their fear of humans and become a threat to public safety.

¦ Store trash in a secure area until the morning of pickup

¦ Don't leave uneaten pet food outside overnight. Store pet food in a secure area.

¦ Protect gardens, compost and livestock

¦ Keep barbecue grills clean

¦ Remove wildlife feeders if a bear has been seen in the area.

¦ You can also add hardware to your garbage can to make them difficult for a bear to open.

If you encounter a bear, do not approach the animal. Find shelter and call 911. Do not attempt to scare off or shoot the bear.
