Elks Lodge raises over $2,000 and 13 units of blood for center
The mother-daughter team of Shirley Hart and Darla Richardson coordinated the Elks Loge Blood Drive, Several people rolled up their sleeves and many others emptied their wallets Saturday, June 20 at the Elks Lodge's Blood Drive held in coordination with the Northwest Florida Blood Center.
Despite poor weather and a broken air conditioning system, $1,924 was raised and 13 pints of blood were drawn as attendees enjoyed an abundant array of silent auction items and food prepared by Fritz and Friends.
Like so many others, Richardson herself cannot donate blood due to her time served overseas, but she wants to support the cause which helps save so many lives.
"I so often hear, 'I can't give blood,' Richardson says. "I lived in England for four years while in the U.S. Air Force, so they won't let me donate because of mad cow disease in Europe,'" Richardson said.
She decided to raise money for the blood center by introducing auctions, and raffles to the event and accepting monetary donations as well. The result is an added layer of activity and a better bottom line. Over 60 local merchants and businesses and a few individuals donated items and gift certificates.
The proceeds netted $1,000 to the Northwest Florida Blood Bank, $924 to wards a patio cover at the Lodge and $575 toward a line of credit.
And, the day was fun, despite the weather and the air conditioning system, which has since been repaired.
