Will rain zap heat wave?
Heat indices over 100 degrees have roasted Gulf Breeze
      A 40 percent chance of rain is in Gulf Breeze's weather forecast for this weekend and is a welcome possibility to locals, who roasted under 100-degree temperatures and even hotter heat indices earlier in the week. The extreme heat was especially hard on those who work outdoors.

Conditions ripe for wildfires
      Dangerously high temperatures continue to parch the Gulf Breeze area, and the Florida Division of Forestry and local fire department leaders are advising the public that great caution should be used during outdoor burning, disposing of smoking materials, or any activity that could result in accidently starting a fire.

Committee to recognize local yards for beauty

      All that hard work weeding, mowing, planting and pruning is finally going to be recognized, as the city of Gulf Breeze is implementing a Yard of the Quarter award. The city will be divided into six sections with one Yard of the Quarter awarded to each section, Beautification Committee Chair Ellie Ackley said.

Tickling the ivories
     Piano students from the studio of Catherine Crawley performed a piano recital May 30. The sunset recital featured a variety of musical forms ranging from classical Beethoven sonatas, romantic intermezzos to New Orleans Blues and Jazz. Participating were Li Ann and Jillian Adams, Simone Canekeratne, Kathryn and Ben Gough, Rachel and Catherine Grimley, Alexa Laux, Katie and Maggie Player, Jamie Seabrooke, Laurel Stanley and Summer Winters.

Law watching for impaired boaters
      Recreational boaters might want to think twice before reaching for that cold beer this weekend. The National Association of State Boating Law Administrators (NASBLA), in partnership with the U.S. Coast Guard, launches Operation Dry Water this weekend. It's an enforcement effort designed to highlight the dangers of operating a boat under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

      Sandra (Sandy) Jernigan never worked any place other than the Navarre school now known as Holley- Navarre Intermediate. "They built the school in 1974, and I came here right out of college that year," Jernigan said. "The school was not quite finished when we started moving in.

Virtual School option to be available this school year
      In August, students who cannot attend Santa Rosa County schools in a regular classroom have a new option to receive credits. The school district has a new option - the Virtual School - it can offer to receive funding for more students from the state.
