GBHS wins Rafferty Cup again
Jason Thompson/Gulf Breeze News Jackie Kasler and Jen Pfeifler's state championship in doubles, plus the baseball team's first postseason trip in 29 years helped GBHS win the Rafferty Cup again. GBHS' strong showing in spring sports was enough for them to repeat as Rafferty Cup champions, it was announced last week.
Gulf Breeze edged rival Catholic by 14 points (125.9- 112) to win the Cup, for the area's top athletic program, for the second straight year. The Cup is sponsored by local attorney and Gulf Breeze News advertiser Troy Rafferty, a big fan of high school sports.
According to the May 24 edition of the PNJ, GBHS scored points in 13 sports to Catholic's 12. Schools accrue points for district, regional and state championships in team sports, as well as individual sports.
The Dolphins made its biggest splash in tennis (where Jackie Kasler and Jen Pfeifler repeated as state champs in doubles, plus both teams made it to state), soccer (girls made it to state for the third straight year and the boys advanced to the regional finals) and girls golf (which made it state).
The baseball, softball and volleyball teams' advancing to regional tournament play also factored in, as well as R.C. Ramirez's regional championship in wrestling.
Pine Forest, with its strong showing in track, finished third (86.7), followed by Washington (62.8) and PHS (60).
