GBHS honors strong spring season with award banquets

Baseball
The Dolphin baseball team celebrated its historymaking season with their awards banquet May 18 at St. Ann's Catholic Church.
"Let's hope we're having it in June next year," coach Randy Renfroe told the crowd just 48 hours after his Dolphins dropped the decisive third game in the Region 1-4A championship series at Jacksonville Paxon.
Among the 'firsts' accomplished by the '09 Dolphins were their first playoff appearance in 29 years, their first ever regional road win and their first mulitple regional game winner in school history.
Ninth grade coach Tim Jordan introduced his team and gave out several awards. Trey Baker won the Offensive MVP award, while Mitchell deKozan won the Pitcher MVP and Taylor Busbee the Defensive MVP.
Cameron Davies won the Mr. Hustle Award.
Jak-y Kohr then introduced the junior varsity team. Anthony Stancher and Adam Gary both win the Mr. Hustle Award, while Mitch Yano and Michael Mann won the Most Improved Award.
Jason Thompson/Gulf Breeze News Adrian Culpepper (Silver Slugger), Alison Milam (Golden Glove) and Lyndsey Wright (Mental Attitude) were award winners at the GBHS Softball team's awards banquet Thursday. Renfroe then introduced the varsity team, which improved his fielding percentage from .915 to .958 in the postseason and hit 27 points higher (from .269 to .296).
Trey Davis won the Most Improved Award, while Tyler Boylan (only three errors) won the Defensive Player of the Year.
Corey Downs and Stephen Robbins were named the Offensive Players of the Year, while Ben Lively was named Top Pitcher.
Alex Ball was named the Top New Pitcher, while Kris Matsoukas won the Hustle Award.
The following players also won Scholar Athlete awards, which went to every player with a 3.5 grade point average or higher.
Ninth grade - Taylor Busbee, Max McDaniel, Andrew Jurnovoy, Cameron Davies, Kyle McGee, Mitchell deKozan, Westin Demotts and Trey Baker.
Junior varsity - Taylor Webb, Colin Davies, Michael Mann, Jase Brown, Alec Purser and Brandon Sorenson.
Varsity - Ryan Boylan, Kris Matsoukas, Greg Shows, Justin Ratte, Luke Crooke, Shane Pascoe, Josh Suelflow, Kenji Dinelli, Tyler McGee, Thomas Dorsey and Trey Davis.
Softball
The Lady Dolphin softball team celebrated its first postseason appearance in seven years and their first district title in 11 years with their awards banquet Thursday at the Rec Center.
Junior varsity coach Patrick Kean introduced his team and gave out the following awards - Jessica Watson (Golden Glove) and Megan McDonald (Silver Slugger). Beverly Zepp, in honor of her daughter Jennifer, awarded the Angel in the Outfield award to Rachel Viglione.
Varsity coach Sean Tomey then introduced his team. Alison Milam won the Golden Glove award, while Adrian Culpepper won the Silver Slugger award and Lyndsey Wright the Mental Attitude award.
All five seniors - Rose Atkinson, Kara Brown, Ginny Coady, Claire Koontz and Lyndsey Wright were all awarded Team Captain plaques.
The following players won Academic Awards - freshman Lauren Harvey, sophomore Coral Molina, junior Rachel Viglione and senior Lyndsey Wright.
The varsity softball team had a team grade point average (unweighted) of 3.5.
Track
The GBHS track teams held their awards banquet May 7 in the cafeteria.
Freshman Kaycee Villane, sophomore Sallie Papajohn, junior Heather Haney and senior Kelsey Moran were the Academic Award winners.
Kathleen Costers won the Most Improved Award, while Kayla Vlachos won the Dolphin Award.
Tobie Bass won the Most Valuable Field athlete, while Emily Tryon won the Most Valuable Track athlete.
The girls team had a team grade point average of 3.68.
Freshman Francis Gelormini, sophomore Colby Dalton, junior Shane Thames and senior Ryan Kent were the Academic Award winners. Trey LeBlanc won the Most Improved Award, while Alejandro Gonzalez won the Dolphin Award.
Dustin Clements won the Most Valuable Field athlete, while Davis Thomas won the Most Valuable Track athlete.
The boys team had a team grade point average of 3.4.
Tennis
The tennis teams held their awards banquet May 11 at the Anastopoulo residence.
A.J. Anastopoulo and Jackie Kasler were named their team's Most Valuable Players. Stefan Harper and Zoe Miller were recognized for playing the Best Match at Districts/Regionals, while Clay Pfeifler and Laurin Halstead won the Best Sportsmanship awards.
The Lady Dolphins, behind Kasler and Jen Pfeifler's second consecutive state doubles championships, took second place at state in the team category.
