Teacher cuts not as bad as previously feared
      There will be 70 fewer pink slips sent to Santa Rosa County school teachers this week than originally planned. Twenty-seven more support personnel will be added back to the ranks of the employed within the district. That was the word from Lewis Lynn, Santa Rosa County School District's Assistant Superintendent of Human Resources, last week.

Navarre Beach Pier construction to begin
BRIEFS
      The Santa Rosa County Board of County Commissioners, Ed Waters and Sons Contracting Co., and PBS&J will celebrate the progress of construction of the much-awaited new Navarre Beach Pier at 1:30 p.m. today, May 28. The event will take place at the new Navarre Beach Pier construction site located at 8704 Gulf Boulevard on Navarre Beach.

Richard Cobb (left) will be the principal of Gulf Breeze Middle School, replacing retiring principal Jennifer Granse. Warren Stephens (right) will be the principal of Gulf Breeze Elementary, replacing retiring Karen Murray. Cobb was assistant principal at GBMS the past five years. Stephens currently is an assistant principal at Oriole Beach Elementary.

      Former Gulf Breeze resident 2nd Lt. Charles W. Jones graduated from U.S. Army Officer Candidate School (OCS) on May 14 at Fort Benning, Ga. Jones is the son of Dennis Jones of Pace and Kelly Fisher of Holt.

Baccalaureate service set for 6 p.m. Sunday at GBUMC
      Baccalaureate services for Gulf Breeze High School seniors will be held Sunday, May 31 at 6 p.m. at Gulf Breeze United Methodist Church, 75 Fairpoint Drive. The Baccalaureate service is a nondenominational religious service, and all are invited to attend.

Navarre Garden Club plans show
      The Navarre Garden Club will sponsor its annual flower show entitled "Celebration" at the Navarre Visitor Center on June 3-4. The club has advanced this year's flower show from Small-Standard" Show to a Standard Flower Show. Garden Club members are invited to submit their entries in any of three divisions - horticulture, floral design or special exhibits.

      Dr. Bob Harriman, Senior Vice President, Baptist Health Care, received yet another accolade when he was granted the 2009 Combined Rotary Ethics in Business Award. The Rotary Clubs of Northwest Florida present the award along with the University of West Florida.

      MacKenzie Louise Kendall, daughter of Jennifer and David Kendall (above) of Jupiter and granddaughter of Karen G. Kendall, formerly of Gulf Breeze, was born at 7:53 a.m. March 18, in Jupiter. She weighed 7 pounds and 11 ounces and was 20 inches long. Proud paternal great-grandmother is Louise Claire (Donaldson) Gillen of Pine Township, Benton County.
