     File Photo This weekend is the official kickoff to the summer tourist season, and Santa Rosa Island officials say they are ready. Hotel rooms are filling up, the road to Fort Pickens is set to open and the road to Navarre Beach is open, allowing many more miles of beach on which to bask.

Military fishing trip includes all branches this year
      Last year, a group o f young Marines got the opportunity to spend a memorable day on the water, deep sea fishing. This year, members of every branch of service will get the same opportunity. Sgt. Jim Knell, USMC Retired, is organizing this trip again to show his support for the military in May, designated as Military Appreciation Month.

After four years, road to Ft. Pickens reopens
      What's old is new again as Fort Pickens becomes accessible to vehicle traffic. It has been more than four years since the popular attraction, part of the National Park Service's Gulf Islands National Seashore branch, hosted fishermen, campers and beachgoers.

Environmental awareness event is Saturday
      "ReUse, ReCycle, ReVision" is May 23, in Navarre Park, beside the Visitors Information Center, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. This eco friendly event will feature artists, businesses and a sale to benefit the local Navarre Fire Department.
