Stewart Stewart Records show that a Navarre man charged with DUI manslaughter and vehicular manslaughter in a deadly crash on State Road 399 last week has a long history of run-ins with the law in seven Florida counties.

Joseph Stewart, 26, remains in Santa Rosa County Jail without bond after the second of two crashes he was involved in last Wednesday claimed the life of 25-year-old Bart Cole of Gulf Breeze.

Stewart, suspected of being drunk, is believed to have been traveling nearly 20 miles per hour over the posted 45-mph speed limit when his 1996 Ford SUV slammed into a 1996 two-door Chevrolet driven by Cole on East Bay Boulevard at approximately 3:12 p.m. on April 1.

Passengers in Cole's vehicle, Jennifer Cole, 25, of Gulf Breeze and Joel Rodriguez, 19, also of Gulf Breeze, were seriously injured and recuperating in a Pensacola hospital.

The crash occurred approximately five minutes after Stewart's SUV clipped a van from behind at the intersection of U.S. Highway 98 and Nantahala Beach Road. Mike and Wendy Gunter of Navarre were not hurt, and Stewart fled eastward, turning north on East Bay Boulevard, where he ultimately was involved in the fatal accident.

Site of last Wednesday's fatal accident Site of last Wednesday's fatal accident Stewart, State Attorney's Office records show, has been arrested in Santa Rosa, Okaloosa, Polk, Pinellas, Volusia, Orange and Osceola counties. He's been ticketed nine times for moving violations, five of which were for speeding. Two charges were for driving with a suspended license.

Also, records show Stewart has completed substance-abuse and DUI schools.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol accident report, Stewart was arrested following last week's second crash and initially held on a $160,000 bond. Additional charges included DUI with serious bodily injury and DUI with property damage. Santa Rosa County Judge Ross Billbrey ordered Stewart held without bond on April 2.

Cole was driving east on State Road 399 and attempting to turn left and north onto Mossy Oaks Lane when Stewart's speeding truck approached from the rear. According the FHP report, Stewart applied his brakes and veered to the left to avoid the turning Chevrolet. The SUV slammed into the left rear of Cole's vehicle, spinning it counterclockwise.

A blood-alcohol test showed that Stewart registered .122. The legal limit in Florida is .08.

According to the FHP, charges were pending in the first incident, which resulted in no injuries.
