PollPortofino owners decry water slide Portofino owners and residents filled the Santa Rosa Island Authority board room to voice their opinions about Premier management's plan to install an inflatable water slide between towers 2 and 3. One owner, Brenda Dick, supports the plan, saying it would boost family business at the resort, putting more "heads in beds" in rental properties during this downturn in the economy. "Financial survival for rental owners trumps aesthetics," she said. However, most in the audience opposed the water slide and the hasty manner in which it was presented to owners. One speaker expressed concern that the slide would attract the public onto Portofino property, a place where parking is already scarce. Others said the slide would decrease property values. Paul Tinsley said the slide and its accompaniments would place portable toilets "right next to people who have million dollar homes." He said it would be "noisy, unsightly and a nuisance." "How would you feel if somebody wanted to install something like this right next door to your million dollar home?" Robert Babcock of the Premier Management Group said the water slide, along with free golf and free beach chairs, is designed to make Portofino attractive to guests. He said a similar slide was popular at Sandestin Beach Resort when he worked there. "I truly believe this will drive room nights," Babcock said. "the other slide will keep people in the core." Tiki Island got approval to place an inflatable water slide on the soundside behind Waves retail shop. The board members voted to send the proposal back to staff to bring a recommendation to the April 22 meeting. |
