Lifeguards will monitor local national seashore beaches

Gulf Islands National Seashore Superintendent Jerry Eubanks announced today that the Park is looking forward to having lifeguarded beaches open for the 2009 season at the following locations: Johnson Beach at Perdido Key, Opal Beach in the Santa Rosa Area (between Pensacola Beach and Navarre Beach), and Langdon Beach in the Fort Pickens Area.

The Johnson Beach Area has been open over the past several seasons; however, both Opal Beach and Langdon Beach have been closed since Hurricane Ivan in 2004. Now, with J. Earle Bowden Way open and the Fort Pickens Road expected to open later this spring or early summer, visitors will again have access to these areas.

Water safety is forefront on the Park's agenda for providing a safe environment for visitors. "All of these Seashore areas are popular destinations for families and swimmers," Eubanks said.

The park is currently recruiting lifeguards to fill at least nine positions to staff Opal, Langdon, and Johnson Beaches. John Hunter, the Park's Water Safety Coordinator, anticipates a staggered start-up of lifeguard services. "We hope to have part-time coverage beginning later this month at Johnson Beach and full time coverage at all three beaches by Memorial Day," Hunter said. The Park also plans to expand the popular Junior Lifeguard program at all three area beaches this summer.

"We are seeking good lifeguards to join our expanding team," Hunter said. The starting salary, depending on experience, is $14.16 - $14.55 per hour. Lifeguards will receive on the job training for Open Water Rescue (USLA) and First Responder (National Registry) courses.
