PollGB Middle School wins state Olympiad The Gulf Breeze Middle School Science Olympiad Team earned first place for the 11th year in a row in the Florida Science Olympiad hosted at the University of Central Florida on Saturday, Feb. 28. The team, comprised of 15 students and five alternates from grades 6 through 8, competed in 23 different events. As winners of the state competition, GBMS will represent the State of Florida at the Science Olympiad National Tournament at Augusta State University in Augusta, Ga., on May 15-16. Nationwide, there are 5,300 secondary schools from 47 states participating, with an additional 10,000 elementary schools holding Science Olympiad tournaments. According to the organization's Web site, at the middle and high school levels "120 of the nation's most competitive Science Olympiad 15-member teams will compete in 46 events spanning the sciences, from chemistry, biology and physics to engineering, robotics and astronomy." Students representing GBMS are: Griffin Battel, Nick Bookout, Jett Crowdis, Rainey Fountain, Nick Gupta, Sebastian Jones, Logan Norris, Rhett Oakley, Davy Pardonner, Allison Proctor, Emilio Rivera, Annemarie Schultz, Kyle Stanley, Nick Staviski, Caroline Sullivan, and Krista Woods. GBMS teacher coaches are: Paige Bates, Deborah Cathey, Casey Fearon and Sharon Schaeffner. For months, the students have been meeting for hours each week as well as studying on their own for their various events. "I have coached Science Olympiad for the last 17 years because I have seen the impact it has had on the lives of our students," Cathey said. "We have always stressed hard work and integrity."
