Graphic illustration by Scott Cleveland/GBN Gulf Breeze High School senior Julia Green never imagined that her classroom doodling would translate into cold, hard cash, but that's exactly what happened when she won a design contest for the 2009 Gulf Breeze Arts Festival.

Each year, Gulf Breeze Arts Inc., holds a logo design contest for the annual art festival, which is this Saturday and Sunday. The winning artist receives a $250 prize.

Green has enjoyed drawing for as long as she can remember but only entered the contest by chance.

"My art teacher (Kelly Strozier) told me about the contest," Green said. "One of the members of the art council saw my original piece and said they wanted something similar.

"I had about a week to put the whole thing together. It was all really last-minute."

You wouldn't know it from the logo Green put together. It features a sea turtle with a mural of well-known Gulf Breeze landmarks on the shell.

"These are the popular landmarks in the area that I will always remember," Green said. "It was difficult to fit everything into such a small space and fill the extra space to tie it all together."

When asked what she will do with the money, Green revealed that she is not the average high school senior.

No trips to the mall or the movies.

"I'm saving the money," Green said. "I want to attend a summer camp that will help me get into a performing arts school.

"I would like to go to Elon in North Carolina."

Sue Warner, Director of the Gulf Breeze Arts Festival, explained why Green's logo was chosen.

"It was her originality," Warner explained. "It was very different than any of the artwork we have received in the past few years."

More of Green's artwork will be on display during the course of the two-day event.

"I will have a table in the art building with some of my pieces," Green said.

Maybe she will be able to raise a little more money to help her pursue her dream to attend a performing arts college. She's certainly doing everything she can to make that happen.

"Right now I'm taking lessons to try and improve as much as I can," Green explained.

She is also preparing for an audition in April to perform in an upcoming Pensacola Little Theatre production.

Until then, Green and nearly 150 other artists will showcase their talents at Gulf Breeze High School this weekend.

The festival is free and open to the public. Designated parking areas are in the Gulf Breeze Middle School and Elementary School parking lots, as well as across the street near Dolphin Stadium. No pets are allowed on the festival grounds.

"Most of the proceeds from the festival go to the south end Santa Rosa County schools' art departments," Warner said. "The rest go toward a scholarship fund at Pensacola Junior College."
