King, Queen of Spain to visit Pensacola Beach in February as part of 450th anniversary
His Majesty the King Juan Carlos with Her Majesty the Queen Sophia of Spain are scheduled to stay on Pensacola Beach. Roll out the red carpet and polish the silver because some special guests are coming for a visit.
Spain's King Juan Carlos and Queen Sophia are scheduled to stay on Pensacola Beach during their visit on Feb. 18-19 to commemorate Pensacola's Spanish heritage over the past 450 years.
After researching the royal couple, I think they will fit in fine on Pensacola Beach.
First of all, His Majesty King Juan Carlos, 71, is a military man, having served at sea as a midshipman on the "Juan Sebastian Elcano." Later he qualified as a military pilot so he will definitely feel at home here in the cradle of Naval aviation. He is a well educated man, having studied law, taxation and economics, so he may have an opinion on how to solve the current Pensacola Beach tax litigation.
He is listed as a patron of the arts, who may enjoy the sounds of a Jimmy Buffet tune being warbled from a beachside bar.
His majesty is also listed as a keen sportsman who particularly enjoys skiing and sailing.
His wife, Her Majesty Queen Sofia, 70, is of Greek descent, and we know she will feel at home here in Northwest Florida with the multitude of great Greek restaurants.
She was a reserve member of the Greek sailing team at the Olympic Games held in Rome in 1960, so the pair may enjoy a sail on the Sound or a deep sea fishing trip into the Gulf of Mexico, if their schedule permits.
The Royal Couple will be visiting Pensacola Beach during the height of Mardi Gras season, so they may blend in with Krewe kings and queens.
