Yes, I know lots of words, but word games are not my specialty

It was only last spring when I had a phone call from a kind reader of the column who, among other remarks, said with a tone of awe, "You do know an awful lot of words, don't you?"

Naturally, I was flattered. But I got my comeuppance after Christmas dinner prepared by my devoted daughter in-law, when I played the word game Balderdash©, with my son, daughter-in-law, daughter, and a schoolteacher friend of theirs.

I must warn you: If your hearing is not the best, and you are due for a cataract operation at the end of the month as well, do not — I repeat, do NOT — expect to make an outstanding showing at this game.

I studied Latin in school and did reasonably well. And, of course, many of our English words have Latin roots. Add in my German background, and I could usually do quite well at this kind of game. But I discovered that when you can't see too well and your hearing is doubtful, things change.

I think I will skip word games for a while. I'll just keep all the words I used to know locked up in my head, though I must confess there is barely enough room for all the other things stuffed in there!

Here are a couple of super foods you should eat. Luckily for me, they are all foods I love - which may be why I plan to celebrate my 93rd birthday on Feb. 3.

Sweet potatoes are a nutritional all-star. They are loaded with vitamin C, potassium and fiber.

Fat-free or low-fat skim milk (1 percent, not 2 percent.) This is an excellent source of calcium, vitamins and protein, with no arteryclogging fat or cholesterol.

A one-half cup serving of 100-percent bran. This provides one-third of the fiber you will need for an entire day and can be mixed in with your favorite cereal.

Of course, we Floridians all know and love our oranges; they are great-tasting and rich in both vitamin C and fiber. Eat the orange, instead of drinking orange juice, which can raise blood sugar too quickly. Eat hearty!

Make plans to attend the Gulf Isle Neighbors' next fundraiser, set for Jan. 14 from 10 a.m. till 2 p.m. at the Pensacola Civic Center. Call Joanie Bolton at 916-1505 to reserve your spot, and have fun knowing you will be helping our Panhandle Butterfly House, Alzheimer's Family Services, the Children's Home Society, and the Emerald Coast Honor Flight for WWII veterans.

Here are some "facts" you might like to know:

Bills travel through the mail at twice the speed of checks.

Ninety-nine percent of lawyers give the rest a bad name.

Criticism is not nearly as effective as threats or bribery.

One need not suffer in silence while one can still moan, whimper and complain!

See you next week!
