McGuire leads ULL to come-frombehind win

Brad McGuire (GBHS Class of 2007) made his first career start for Louisiana Lafayette Saturday, rallying the Rajun Cajuns back from a 23-14 deficit to beat Arkansas State 28-23.

McGuire overcame five sacks and two interceptionsincluding one Arkansas State returned for a touchdown, to lead the Rajun Cajuns to two scores in the final 4:16 of the game to stay unbeaten in Sun Belt Conference play.

McGuire scored the second of his two rushing touchdowns on a 4-yard run to pull ULL within two (23-21) with 4:16 left. Then after ULL got the ball back, McGuire, with no time outs, led the Rajun Cajuns to the gamewinning score.

On third and 14, McGuire completed a 30 yard pass to the 9-yard-line. Tailback Tyrell Fenroy scored on the next play with 42 seconds left.

McGuire went 9-for-16 passing for 106 yards and had 90 yards in positive rushing yardage, but five sacks resulted in a net of 54 yards. McGuire filled in for starter Michael Desormeaux, who is battling a knee injury.

Doug Baldwin (Class of '07) had a run for 36 yards in Stanford's last second 23-20 loss at UCLA.

Baldwin also had an 18-yard punt return in the loss for the 4-4 Cardinal.

Aileen Atzhorn (Class of '08) made her collegiate swimming debut for South Carolina on Thursday, competing in four events in a 176-124 loss to North Carolina.

Atzhorn was eighth in the 100 yard breaststroke (1:07.54), the 200 yard breaststroke (2:29.67) and the 200 yard individual medley (2:14.56). She was the second leg on South Carolina's seventh place finish in the 400 yard medley relay (4:04.18).

Her older brother Andy (Class of '06) won the 500 yard freestyle (4:40.76) and the 200 yard IM (1:53.88) as the Gamecocks lost to UNC 184-115.

Kyle Cormier (Class of '04) was the anchor leg on USC's winning 400 yard freestyle relay (3:06.03) and anchored their second place finish in the 400 yard medley relay (3:24.17). He was also second in the 200 yard freestyle (1:40.87) and was third in the 100 free (46.61).

Ben Ganus (Class of '06) had 35 yards rushing, while Zach Brothers (Class of '06) had two total tackles, including 1.5 for losses as Huntingdon College blasted Blackburn College 45-0 to stay unbeaten at 6-0.

Aaron Hill (Class of '06) started at center for LaGrange College, who needed a 17-point fourth quarter to pull away from Westminster College 37-20 Saturday. The Knights are 6-1, and like Huntingdon, are unbeaten in St. Louis Intercollegate Athletic Conference play (4-0).

Carroll Papajohn (Class of '06) had a catch for 17 yards in Dartmouth's 44-26 loss to Holy Cross. The Big Green (0-5) is still looking for its first win of the season.

Corie Skislak (Class of '04) had four kills and a block for Mount Olive College in a 3-0 win over St. Andrews Oct. 14. Jamie Hayes (Class of '06) had 15 assists and four digs in the loss for St. Andrews.

Hayes had 22 assists and five digs in St. Andrews' 3-0 win over Converse College Saturday. Hayes had 20 assists and nine digs in SAPC's 3-0 loss to Limestone on Thursday.

Evan Brown (Class of '05) made his first start of the season for the Eckerd College soccer team in a 3-1 loss to Tampa on Oct. 14. Brown played all 90 minutes.

Kaley Morris (Class of '06) played all 90 minutes, while Noelle Robles (Class of '08) played 12 in second-ranked West Florida's 5-0 win over Alabama Huntsville Friday.

Kristi Lee (Class of '07) played 17 minutes for the University of south Alabama soccer team in its 4-1 loss at Florida International Thursday.

Fellow USA student Will Thomas (Class of '08) finished 13th out of 48 runners in the Coach O Cross Country Invitational at Troy University Saturday. His 5K time was 16:51.
