Volleyball wins Tate Tourney
Win streak at six heading into district clash Tuesday at Navarre

At first glance, it looked like a volleyball match, but it more resembled a chinese fire drill.

The Gulf Breeze Lady Dolphins extended their winning streak to six games as they beat Milton 25-21, 25-15 in the final of the Tate Invitational Saturday.

Both schools had their Homecoming Dances on Saturday night, giving girls from both teams about two hours to drive home and get ready for their respective dances.

Milton (10-7) led 6-2 early in game one before a kill by Lauren Alverson and two Kylie Conner serves gave the Lady Dolphins a 10-9 lead. Milton would force a sideout before another Alverson kill gave GBHS (15-3, 6-2 in district) the lead for good.

Milton got to within two (20-18) late before a kill by Celia Eddy closed out the game.

Eddy, who appeared to roll her ankle on the match's first point, finished with six kills and three blocks.

Milton took a 9-7 lead in game two before the Lady Dolphins outscored them 18-6 the rest of the way.

Conner had three straight points on serve, while new varsity player Lindsey Hawthorne, along with Alverson and Lacie Brothers had two each.

Jasmine Crowell had 11 kills out of 16 attempts. She also was 6-for-6 on serves.

Tobie Bass had five kills and two blocks, while Alverson led the defense with eight digs. Kelly Hayes had six, while Brothers and Alison Milam had five each.

West Florida 5-12

Eddy had 13 kills in 16 attempts as GBHS finished pool play with a win over West Florida.

Eddy also had four blocks, while Bass was 5-for-5 on kills. Tristan Powers had 17 assists with no passing errors.

The most digs any Lady Dolphin had in the match was two.

Tate 15-13

Eddy was 10-for-11 in kills as Gulf Breeze won two straight games over Tate.

Eddy also had five blocks, while Crowell had seven kills and Brothers five kills and three digs.

Hayes led the Lady Dolphins with four digs, while Powers had 21 assists and had four aces. Brothers also had four aces.

Crestview 10-16

Eddy and Crowell both had nine kills as Gulf Breeze won their opener against Crestview.

Defensively, Hayes led the team with eight digs, while Milam had seven.

Eddy also had five aces and three blocks. Bass had six kills in nine attempts.

Milton 14-19-20

A 17-kill, six-dig, six block effort from Eddy led the Lady Dolphins to a three-game sweep of Milton Thursday.

Crowell added 10 kills, while Alverson had 12 digs and was 15-for-15 on serves. Milam had 11 digs, while Powers had seven digs and 27 assists. Hayes had six digs, while Bass had five blocks and four kills.

West Florida 12-11-10

Conner was 16-for-16 on serves with seven aces, while Eddy had 12 kills as the Lady Dolphins rolled at West Florida Sept. 30.

Bass added six kills, while Crowell had five and Brothers four. Milam had 10 digs, while Hayes had four. Powers had 26 assists and four aces.

Milton 23-6

Gulf Breeze hung one for a game one win before pulling away in the second.

Cheyenne Chapman and Sallie Papajohn had five kills each, while Bailey Kernodle had five digs and Ashley Scott four.

Katie Stanhagen had 11 assists, while Adrian Culpepper had four aces.

The game was a special one for the unbeaten Lady Dolphins (11-0), who wore pink t-shirts before the match in honor of Scott's mother Jenny as part of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

West Florida 11-7

Stanhagen had eight points on serve, while Kernodle had eight points on serve and seven aces as GBHS easily handled West Florida.

Papajohn had six kills, while Caroline Waghalter and Sarah Lewis had four aces each.

Lady Dolphin ninth grade

25-25, Milton 15-7

Shannon Kehoe had seven digs and 18 points on serves as the Lady Dolphin ninth graders improved to 10-0. Lauren Harvey added seven points, while Torie Gray had six assists.

Samantha Webking had four kills.

Lady Dolphin ninth grade

25-25, West Florida 20-19

Webking had 13 points on serve with five kills, while Bailey Clements had four kills as the freshman team beat West Florida.

Gray had eight assists in the win.
