In a crowded field of eight 14U baseball teams, the 13U Gulf Breeze Slammers went 5- 0 to win the first annual Tiger Point Shootout at the Tiger Point Recreation Facility in Gulf Breeze.
En route to the championship, the Slammers won two games over the Navarre Raiders, a win over the GBSA 14U Dolphins and a 10-8, extra-inning win over the Pace Full Throttle.
"Winning this championship on our home field in extra innings against the Pace team was a huge thrill for our team," manager George Scarborough said. "Pace had recently beaten us in a tournament championship on their home field, so we were happy to even the score with them."
Leading the effort in the championship game were great pitching performances by Frankie Castagna, Casey Moye and Jon Jon Burkett. Burkett also added a couple of timely hits late in the game, and the go-ahead runs were scored in the top half of the first extra inning by Casey Moye and Benjamin Scarborough.
Two outstanding defensive plays sealed the deal in the bottom of the eighth inning, giving the Slammers the championship.
