The Relay for Life and the rescheduled Elton John Concert had some Pensacola Beach Optimists worried that their annual fundraiser would have a sparse turnout, raising over $5,000.

But Club President Mary Claus said the event, which was back at the Hilton for the first time since Hurricane Ivan in 2004, was a nice success.

Funds from the drawing and proceeds from the event were earmarked to improve Pensacola Beach Elementary School's general technology and create an ITV studio.

Grand prize winner was Shelby Smith, an employee of PBES, who won $2,500 from her $100 donation. An additional $2,500 was given, in smaller increments, to other donors.

The Fantasy Island theme had some attendees turning back the clock to don opennecked shirts, mini skirts and disco outfits. However, the majority of attendees played it safe and wore black tie.

"If I must say so, they were the handsomest bunch of Optimist supporters to date anywhere," Claus said. "What wonderful folks we have in this community."
