Savage records first professional point It was a day of firsts Saturday for 2003 GBHS grad Keith Savage. In just his third professional soccer match with Major League Soccer's Chivas USA, Savage was in the starting lineup. Before the halftime whistle in Columbus against the Columbus Crew, Savage recorded his first professional point, setting up Sacha Kjiestan for Chivas' first goal. The recent UWF grad played the entire first half in Chivas' 4-3 loss to the Crew. In other recent GBHS grad news: Brock Sakey (c/o '05) won his singles and doubles match April 12 for the University of Central Florida against Jacksonville. Sakey played number three singles and number two doubles with Claudio Romano. University of Alabama-Birmingham left fielder Philip Bell (c/o '04) had a huge weekend against one of the top teams in the country. The same couldn't be said about his team, who got swept by seventh-ranked Rice. Bell went 3-for-5, including hitting his fifth home run of the season, in UAB's 11-4 loss Friday. On Saturday, Bell singled, doubled and tripled with four RBIs in a 13-11 loss. In the series finale, Bell went 3-for-4 with another home run in a 12-8 loss to the Owls, who won the game on a 10th-inning walk-off grand slam. Bell entered the Rice series off a 2-for-4 game in a 10-6 win over Samford. Steven Cheney (c/o '04) struck out two in two innings of relief work in the Single- A Port St. Lucie Mets' 7-4 loss to Jupiter on April 6. He struck out two more in two innings in Port St. Lucie's 10-1 loss to Brevard County on April 9. Lizzy Mabry (c/o '06) was fourth in the pole vault for Florida State in the April 12 FSU Seminole Invitational. Mabry made a leap of 11 feet-7.75 inches. |
