Renfroe helps '83 Dolphins notch 8-4 win over Woodham

Gulf Breeze baseball coach Randy Renfroe hasn't only been helping the current Dolphin team post wins - he's also done it in the past as well.

Renfroe had the game-winning RBI this week for the 1983 Dolphins, who beat Woodham 8- 4. Jimmy Wright threw a fourhitter to get the victory.

Editorial Note - Several last names were unavailable at press time.

1973 - The girls tennis team edged Tate 4-3. Winners in singles include Crane, May and Gonia. Crane and May also won their doubles match.

The track team took third in a four team meet. Marshall won the 120 and 330 meter hurdles, while Pugh took second in the 880 (2:03) and Shores second in the two mile (11:00.1).

Gulf Breeze then took second in a three-team meet. Tate won the meet, while Baker was third.

Marshall again won those two events, while Dixon won the mile, Elbert the high jump and Shores the two mile.

1978 - Amy Bleiler and Martha Ridder advances to the semifinals in number two doubles at the district tournament at Roger Scott. Ridder also advanced to the quarterfinals in number three singles.

Mary Grafton and Michelle Brooks advanced to the quarterfinals in number one doubles, while Brooks made it to the quarterfinals in number four singles.

Lori Fishbaugh made it to the semifinals in number five singles.

Grafton advanced to the finals in number one singles, while Greg and West Burgin made it to the quarterfinals in number one doubles. Greg Burgin made it to the second round in singles competition.

Ray Hudson and Martin Lason both advanced to the quarterfinals in number four and five singles, respectively.

The track team won a three team meet with Milton and Crestview. Lydon Pendergraph won two events, including setting a school record in the 100 meter dash (11.1). Susan Gless won two events and with Jeanette Reyness, Kim Carrey and Rachael Moore set a school record in the 440 meter relay (4:34.5).

Richard Hardy won the discus (163-5) and was second in the shot put (50-3) at the third annual Woodham Invitational.

The Lady Dolphin softball team lost to Crestview 7-6, while the boys golf team, led by Kevin Giddis' 38, took third in a four team match at the Santa Rosa Shores Country Club.

1983 - The Lady Dolphin softball team, behind the pitching of Harmon, beat PHS 5-0. Varner and Givens both had triples in the win.

The boys track team took second in a three team meet. Choctaw won the meet, while Washington was third.

Johnston won the 330 meter hurdles (41.4), while Brownile won the 800 (2:06). Droogsma won the shot put (165-9).

The girls track team was second in a four team meet. McGraw won the two mile (13:56), while Hawkes won the high jump (5-0).

1988 - GBHS senior Burt Rice, Jr. won the Division II Olympic Classes Regatta Sailboarding competition in Long Beach, Calif. He also qualified for the European Tour in Holland.

The Dolphin baseball team, behind a three-hitter from Tripp Hill, beat Milton 4-0 to take the lead in District 1-3A.

Hill, who struck out 16 in the Dolphins' win over Milton earlier in the season, fanned five in this game.

Steve Cofone doubled and scored the game-winning run when Hill drew a bases loaded walk. Daryl Wise then grounded out to score Lee Colby, who singled.

The Dolphins, behind a two-hitter from Billy Lawrence, beat Butler County, Ky. 18-1. Lawrence had two doubles with an RBI and three runs scored. Pete Fox was 2- for-2 with a triple and four RBIs, while Rett Moncries was 2-for-2 with an RBI.

The Lady Dolphin softball team pounded out 32 hits in beating Fort Walton Beach 19-3. Michelle Patterson and Jade Neal both had five hits, while Heather Steinbach went 3-for-3, including a three-run homer.

Mary Endfinger and Amy Carlisle both had three hits, while Amy Johnston and winning pitcher Barbara Hanratty had two hits each.

The Lady Dolphins then gave up three runs in the first inning in a 7-1 loss to Escambia.

The boys tennis team beat PHS 7-0, while the girls lost 7-0.

The GBHS track team took second place at the Pace Patriot Invitational. Kline won the 120 (15.2) and the 330 (41.9) meter hurdles. Shane won the mile (4:33), while Pell won the 440 (53.2).

1993 - Dolphin basketball player David Satterwhite, who averaged 22.4 points, 8.8 rebounds and 2.6 assists a game, signs with defending national champion PJC.

The baseball team lost 5-3 to PHS.

1998 - The Dolphin baseball team defeated Valley View 16-6. Rohan went 3-for- 5 and scored twice, while R. Smith went 2-for-3 with a home run and three RBIs. Parris went 2-for-3 with two RBIs, while Entrekin went 2- for-3 with three RBIs.

The Dolphins then defeated Allen County, Ky. 9-3. Jace Crooke struck out six in the win, while Paul Smith doubled, tripled and drove in three.

2003 - Former heavyweight champion Evander Holyfield was in town to watch his children, who compete for Atlanta's Landmark Christian, at the GBHS NovaCare Invitational.

Brett Heatley was second in the discus for Gulf Breeze (137-9.5), while Lizzy Mabry was second in the pole vault (8-0).

Sarah Richey was third in the 300 meter hurdles (48.82), while Darren Jones and Jessica O'Connor were fourth in the pole vault (11-0) and 100 meter hurdles (16.23), respectively. Emily Custred was seventh in the two mile (12:54.06).

Josh Nichols and Steven Whippler advanced to the state weightlifting meet. Nichols was third at regionals in the heavyweight division (335 pounds in bench press, 225 in clean and jerk), while Whippler second in the 139 pound class (215/215).

Kaitlin Weeks' single with one out in the seventh was the difference as Gulf Breeze upset eighth-ranked Escambia 3-2. Alexis Tilton had four hits, while Kristen Milam threw a five-hitter and struck out five.

Weeks then threw a onehitter in a 7-0 win over Arnold. Tilton went 2-for-3 with three runs scored and three stolen bases.

The Dolphin baseball team lost to Pine Forest 5-4 and Navarre 4-3.

Philip Bell went 3-for-4 with two doubles and two runs scored against Pine Forest, while Zach Dougan went 2-for-3. Steven Cheney struck out eight in the loss to Navarre.

Darryl Forster allowed only five hits in a 2-1 loss to Bay. Of GBHS' five district losses, four have been by one run.

The U14 Bayside KAOS and the U11 Thunder advance to the Presidents Cup. The KAOS won Region D by with a 4-0 win over the GBS Slammers.

Chris Thomas and Nik Hoskins both scored twice. Cory Gibson and Thomas both scored twice and Hoskins once in a 7-5 loss to St. Augustine United.

The U11 Thunder got four goals from Brian Bird and three from Evan Smith on their way to winning Region D. Danny Gibble, Max Gerke and Tyler Willets all had assists.
