Cheney makes Mets' High-A club

Steven Cheney, a 2004 GBHS grad, has recently made the roster for the Port. St. Lucie Mets, their High-A affiliate.

"He has had great movement on his fastball, not to mention the added velocity on his fastball jumped 2-3 miles per hour," said father Steve Cheney in an email to the Gulf Breeze News.

Cheney pitched two innings in Port St. Lucie's season opener Thursday against the Vero Beach Devil Rays. Cheney pitched the sixth and seventh innings of the Mets' 8- 3 loss, allowing four hits with a walk and a strikeout. He didn't factor into the decision.

Last year, Cheney was 4-4 for the Brooklyn Cyclones of the New York- Penn league with a 2.70 earned run average. He walked 12 and struck out 39 in 40 innings, with opponents holding a .226 batting average against him.

Kyle Cormier (c/o '04) qualified for the Olympic Trials in the 200 meter freestyle at the Toyota Grand Prix at Ohio State University Friday in Columbus, Ohio.

Cormier, who has two years of swimming eligibility remaining at the University of South Carolina, was seventh with a time of 1:52.52.

Cormier also swam in the 50 meter freestyle on Saturday, finishing with a time of 23.74. The Olympic qualifying time is 23.49. Cormier, the 2003 state champion in the 500 meter freestyle, has already qualified for the Olympic Trials in the 100 meter freestyle.

Keith Savage (c/o

'03) made the travel team to Dallas for Chivas USA's season opening match on March 31. Savage did not play in the 1-1 tie. He also made the roster for Chivas' 2-1 win over Real Salt Lake, their home opener, on Saturday.

Savage scored two preseason goals for Chivas, including one in a 4-1 win over Real Espana of the Honduran First Division on March 23. He also scored in a 4- 0 win over the Fresno Fuego of the United Soccer League.

Katie Dollinger (c/o '06) set a pair of personal records for Rice University at the 57th annual Texas Southern Relays on March 21.

Dollinger was sixth in the hammer throw with a PR 142 feet, three inches and was fifth in the shot put with a personal best 42 feet-0.75 inches. She was also 10th in the discus (127 feet, two inches).

Dollinger was also fifth in the shot put (42-9), sixth in the discus (136-6) and seventh in the hammer throw (148-7) at the Victor Lopez Bayou Classic March 28-29.

Philip Bell (c/o '04) had hits in a doubleheader split for Alabama- Birmingham with the University of Alabama April 1-2. UAB lost game one 6-4 before winning game two 8-5.

Bell had two hits, including his third home run of the season, in a 10-5 win over Troy on March 25.

Bell, UAB's starting left fielder, is on a 17-game hitting streak (as of April 2). He's hitting .312, second best on the team. His 34 hits is second best on the team, while his nine stolen bases leads the Blazers.

Kim Tryon (c/o '06) was sixth in the pole vault for Rhodes at the Rhodes Invitational March 29. She was also second in the pole vault (11-0) and 22nd in the 100 meter hurdles (17.15) at the Southern Miss Invitational on March 15.

She was fourth in the pole vault (11-1.75) and 13th in the 100 meter hurdles (16.71) at the Rhodes Open meet on March 22.

Lizzy Mabry (c/o '06) was sixth in the pole vault for Florida State at the FSU Snowbird Invitational on March 21.

Kyle Brown (c/o '06) went 2-for-2 with a run scored in UWF's 11-9 win over West Georgia on March 30. He had a hit and two runs scored in a 12-5 win over Stillman College on April 1.

Brown has at least one hit, one run scored or one run batted in in each of his last seven games. Brown's batting .315 with 14 RBIs (as of April 3).

Brock Sakey (c/o '05) has won seven of his last 10 matches for the University of Central Florida's tennis team. He won his singles and doubles matches against Louisiana Lafayette on March 28 and Cornell on March 21.
