Softball team splits district pair

The Gulf Breeze Lady Dolphin softball team shut out West Florida 6-0 before losing to Milton 4-1 Thursday in District 1-4A play.

The loss to Milton ensures the Lady Dolphins (10-12, 6-4) will be the third seed in the district tournament and will have to win two games, including one most likely against second seed Milton to clinch their first playoff berth in six years.

Milton 4, Lady Dolphins 1

GBHS left runners on in five different innings as Milton scored two in the third and sixth innings to win Thursday in Gulf Breeze.

Gulf Breeze scored their lone run in the bottom of the sixth. Claire Koontz beat out a bunt single and scored on a wild pitch.

Alison Milam had two of Gulf Breeze's six hits, including a leadoff triple in the bottom of the first. Natalie Alverson also had two hits, including a twoout double in the fourth. Kori Ewens had the only other hit, a single in the fourth.

Lady Dolphins 6,

West Florida 0

Milam threw a two-hit shutout, striking out 11, while having two hits of her own in a shutout of West Florida March 25.

Milam also scored Gulf Breeze's first run in the third when after reaching on a single, scored on a single by Deannette Zuniga. Alverson doubled in the fourth inning and scored on a sacrifice fly by Charlsie Langley.

Gulf Breeze put the game away with four in the top of the sixth. Anna Schundelmier singled to score both Langley (reached on error) and Milam (walked) before Rosie Atkinson reached on an error to score Schundelmier and Koontz, who also reached on an error.

Adrian Culpepper, Koontz, Lyndsey Wright and Ewens all had one hit each. Milam walked four to go with her 11 strikeouts.

Milton JV 11,

Lady Dolphins 1

Gulf Breeze was held to three hits in a loss to Milton Thursday. Morgan Bass doubled and scored GBHS' lone run. Breezy Paulus and Caroline Waghalter had the team's only other hits.

Lady Dolphin JV 13,

West Florida 0

(five innings) Mallory Mead and Paulus combined on a three-hit shutout of West Florida March 25.

Anndrea Marsh went 3-for-4 with a double, three runs scored and four RBIs, while Rachel Viglione had two doubles and two RBIs.

Jessica Watson tripled and scored twice, while Kellie Krueger and Kasey Landfair both scored twice.

The Lady Dolphins hosts Pace on Tuesday.
