U15 Barracudas win again
The Barracudas, who won all six games Saturday by an average of 10 points, had to play three three-set matches to win the title Sunday. They beat Dig It from Alabama 24-26, 28-26, 15-4 and the Panama City Lightning 17-25, 25-17, 15-5 before beating the Dothan Deep South 25-18, 23-25, 15-8. It was their third straight title win over Deep South. The U15s opened pool play with a 25-7, 25-15 win over Club Fusion. They then defeated Deep South 25-22, 25-18 before beating the Bayou Bandits 25-9, 25-21. The Barracudas fell behind 7-1 in game one against the Lightning in part because of service errors. They had five in game one alone and 11 in the match. The match was tied at 5 before a sideout, then nine straight serves from Katie Stanhagen closed out the match. The U15s have three current members of the Lady Dolphin varsity team - Lauren Alverson, Jasmine Crowell and Alison Milam. They also have two members of the junior varsity team (Cheyenne Chapman and Lindsey Hawthorne) and two members from the freshman team (Sallie Papajohn and Stanhagen). Sarah Lewis is an eighth grader at Gulf Breeze Middle, while Ashton Baker is a freshman at Milton High School. The U17 team, coached by Pace High coach Jody Goetz, went 2-1 in pool play. They defeated Navarre Beach 25-19, 25-19 and shook off a game one loss to defeat the Cayenne 17s 24-26, 25-11, 15-11. They finished with a tough 31-29, 25- 20 loss to Eastern Shore to finish second in their pool. The Barracudas lost their double elimination opener to the Bay Area Boomers 25-14, 25-21 before losing to the Birmingham 17s 18-25, 25-12, 15-12. The U17s have six current members of the Lady Dolphin varsity team - juniors Tobie Bass, Lacie Brothers, Celia Eddy and Brittany Wheeler, along with sophomores Tristan Powers and Robyn Davidson. Sophomores Kelly Hayes and Kylie Conner were on the JV team this past season. The U13 '2' team, coached by Cheryl Burt, went 0-3 in pool play before winning their final match Sunday. They lost a nailbiter to the Alabama Juniors 13-25, 30-28, 20-18 in their opening match before losing to Club Bomba 25-8, 25-6 and the Storm (Taylor) 25-17, 25-13. They lost to Sideout Mobile 25-21, 25-14 before beating the Storm (Jillian) 25-12, 25-18. |
