Dolphins salvage split with Panthers
Gulf Breeze (7-5 overall) led 5-3 after six innings before the Panthers scored four runs with two outs to win 8-6. Milton scored single runs in the first and second innings before Gulf Breeze scored one in the bottom half. GBHS was the 'home' team in game one, since it's was a remake of their Feb. 22 game, which was cancelled due to bad weather. Brandon Scott, who went 3- for-3 with two RBIs, singled with one out and scored on passed ball. Gulf Breeze was looking for more, but left two runners on base. The Dolphins stranded a pair of runners in four different innings, including runners at second and third with nobody out in the fourth. GBHS added two in the third to take a 3-2 lead. Kameron Brunty and Kris Matsoukas both drew two out walks before scoring on a single by Scott.
Corey Downs, who went 2- for-3, beat out an infield single before scoring on a single by Dane Monnin. Mark Waghalter, making his second start of the season, threw the first six innings, allowing five hits and two strikeouts and only one walk. Scott pitched the seventh, giving up a pair of 'seeing eye' singles that plated two runs, with another run scoring on a double steal where the Dolphins missed a tag. Scott drew a two out walk in the bottom of the seventh before Patrick Vance, who went 2-forat 3, drove him in with a single. But GBHS again would leave two runners on when the game ended. Dolphins 5, Panthers 1 Sophomore Thomas Dorsey won his first varsity game, throwing five-plus innings with four strikeouts as the Dolphins salvaged the nightcap. Gulf Breeze took a 3-0 lead in the top of the third. Matsoukas' two-out double scored both Scott, who hit an RBI single to score Monnin, and Vance, who walked. Milton scored their lone run in the fourth before the Dolphins tacked on insurance runs in the fifth and sixth. Scott, who went 3-for-3 again, singled and scored on a wild pitch in the fifth before Brunty singled with two outs in the sixth to score Monnin, who hit a leadoff single. Warford coaxed a ground ball for a double play in the sixth, his first pitch after relieving Dorsey. Ben Lively got out of a bases loaded jam in the seventh by throwing a pitch that led to a game-ending double play. T.J. Jordan scored twice for the Dolphins, who play at West Florida tonight at 6:30. Dolphin JV 7, Milton 1 Jackson Yates threw a complete-game, six-hitter, striking out three and walking none Friday in Gulf Breeze. Stephen Robbins went 3-for-4 with a double and scored twice, while Robyn Hoffpauir went 2-for- 4 with a double and an RBI. Alex Ball and Nicky Schumacher both had a hit and two RBIs in the win.
