God is our fortress in life's storms
While I served on Okinawa for over five years my family and I survived seven typhoons. They were nowhere near as traumatic an experience. We arrived on the island a day after a typhoon and the island had returned to normal. What a difference between there and here. I attribute the difference to two things. First, most of Okinawa is well above sea level, thus tidal surge is nowhere near the problem. Second, all homes and buildings are constructed of cinder block or reinforced concrete. There is no lumber on Okinawa, not much any ways. The Battle for Okinawa at the end of World War II eliminated most of the forests. Rebuilding claimed the remainder. Consequently, high land and concrete buildings take the fear out of typhoons, besides there is nowhere to go. U.S. military authorities warn all personnel and families to remain in their storm-proof quarters during a typhoon. Anyone who ventures out takes his life in his hands. One year two sailors decided to watch the storm waves from a pier. They were swept out to sea and drowned. It was a senseless, tragic loss.
"The Lord is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer, my God, my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield, and the strength of my salvation, my stronghold." (Psalm 18:2) I invite you to worship with us this weekend, or the church of your choice; remain strong in the Lord! |
