GBHS science team excels at state level Most students are bummed when it's time to go to science, while others are excited. You may call them nerds, or geeks, but they don't care. They proudly wear their shirt that says "Talk Nerdy to Me." In science, there are so many fields ranging literally from A to Z From Acoustics to Zoology. If you love science and go to Gulf Breeze High School you are encouraged to tryout for the Science Olympiad team. Sue Cundiff, a teacher at Gulf Breeze High School said "Science Olympiad benefits high schoolers by helping them find interests in science and the areas they are good at. It helps students learn how to study and organize their time." Cundiff has been teaching at Gulf Breeze High School for 25 years. Six years ago she took on a second job, helping the school's Science Olympiad team. What is Science Olympiad? Science Olympiad is an elementary, middle school and high school team competition that requires knowledge of various science topics, mathematics, and engineering ability. Last year, the high school went to state competition, which was in Orlando, and won for the fifth consecutive year. This year they are going for the sixth. There was an amazing amount of interest shown this year for Science Olympiad. There were so many people, in fact, that there are two teams, the A team and B team. On the A team there are seven seniors, five juniors, and three sophomores. The seniors are: Kelsey Campbell, Kyle Finelli, Logan Redja, Ryan Roose, Meagan Schaeffner, Jon Villanueva, and Stewart Williams. Juniors members include Collin Burke, Chloe Diehl, Ryan Henderson, Jason Lambert, and Alex York. Sophomores members include Vincent Costers, Nick Musmansky, and Alex Williams. On the B team there are five people. Juniors members include Jordan Monahan and sophomores students include Brianna Edler, Chau Ho, and Garrett Zanca. Ho said "The best thing about Science Olympiad is going to state competition and being able to meet and compete against other schools around the state. It's tough but it all pays off in the end." This year the Gulf Breeze Science Olympiad team will be leaving for state competition in Orlando on Friday, March 21. They will compete on Saturday, March 22, at the University of Central Florida in Orlando. If you would like to make a donation to the Science Olympiad team and help them go to state, one way you can do that is by saving and bringing your Bruno's receipts to, either the high school or dropping them off at Brunos' courtesy counter and asking that your receipts be put in the box for the high school Science Olympiad team. (The Middle School team also has a box at Brunos where receipts can be placed, also.) The reason they are collecting the green receipts is because Brunos donates 1 percent of the total funds to the high school. Monetary donations are also accepted. The club accepts checks made out to Gulf Breeze High School. They can be brought to the high school or mailed to Sue Cundiff at GBHS, 675 Gulf Breeze Parkway, Gulf Breeze, Fla., 32561. There is another way you can help. Help Gulf Breeze Science Olympiad teams be able to say "We came, we conquered." |
