Standoff in Navarre leaves one man dead

A Navarre man shot himself last Friday after barricading himself in his home, sheriff's officials said.

Richard William Modugno, 56, locked himself inside his home on the 6500 block of Calle De Lago in Navarre just after 5:30 p.m. Family members that were home at the time said Modugno became violent an irrational after drinking alcohol and consuming an unknown amount of unknown medications.

The family members present were able to leave uninjured and told deputies on scene that Modugno fired several shots in the home as they fled. They also said the subject inside had armed himself with a semiautomatic handgun. As deputies arrived, one shot was heard from inside the residence. Deputies attempted to make contact with the subject through a variety of ways, but were unsuccessful. The Santa Rosa County Sheriff's Office SWAT team was called to the scene along with crisis negotiators. After numerous attempts were made to contact the suspect, the SWAT team entered the residence through a rear door and found that the subject was deceased inside with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. Sheriff's Office investigators were called to the scene to conduct an investigation into the subject's death.
