Former GBHS teammates on opposite sides of pool
Tryon breaks Rhodes record, Brown off to strong start at UWF

It a reunion of sorts for several former GBHS swimmers in a Jan. 25 meet in Columbia, South Carolina.

Stevi Steinhauer (GBHS c/o

'06) won three events to lead Florida State to a 171.5- 128.5 win over USC. FSU's men team, which includes Jimmy Holway (c/o '05) and

Matt Skinner (c/o '06) beat South Carolina 169-131. The USC men's team includes Kyle Cormier (c/o '04) and Andy Atzhorn (c/o '06).

Steinhauer was the anchor led on FSU's second place finish in the 200 yard medley relay (1:47.23). She also won the 50 yard freestyle (23.62) and the 100 yard freestyle (51.41) and was the second leg on FSU's winning 400 yard freestyle relay (3:29.65).

Atzhorn was third in the 100 yard backstroke (52.27) and was second in the 200 yard backstroke (1:52.27) and the 200 yard individual medley (1:53.27). He was the third leg on USC's second place finish in the 400 yard freestyle relay team (3:05.97).

Holway was sixth in the 200 yard freestyle (1:44.02), seventh in the 50 yard freestyle (22.08) and third in the 100 yard freestyle (47.59). He was the second on FSU's winning 400 yard freestyle relay team (3:05.41).

Another reunion of sorts took place in Auburn on Feb. 9. Auburn's women's team, which includes diver Courtney Brown (c/o '06), beat FSU 177-118. The Auburn men won 190-106.

Brown was seventh in the one meter diving competition (211.5). Steinhauer won two events and was the anchor leg on FSU's third place finish in the 200 yard medley relay (1:43.91). She won the 50 yard freestyle (23.46) and was the opening leg of FSU's winning 400 yard freestyle relay (3:28.56). She was also third in the 100 yard freestyle).

FSU's Jessie Carr (c/o '06) was 11th in the 100 yard breaststroke (1:08.22).

Holway was sixth in the 50 yard freestyle (21.56) and fifth in the 100 yard freestyle (47.53). He was the second leg on FSU's winning 200 yard freestyle relay (1:22.52).

On Jan. 26, Brown took fourth in the one meter diving competition in Auburn's 165- 135 loss to Florida.

Steinhauer took home two second place finishes in a 150.5- 149.5 win over Clemson on Jan. 26. She was second in the 50 yard freestyle (24.00) and was the second leg of FSU's second place finish in the 400 yard freestyle relay team (3:27.08).

She was also the anchor leg on FSU's third place finish in the 200 yard medley relay (1:46.16) and was fourth in the 100 yard freestyle (53.2).

Holway was sixth in the 200 yard freestyle (1:45.29) and the 50 yard freestyle (21.96) and was fourth in the 100 yard freestyle (47.56).

Holway was also the second leg on FSU's second place finish in the 400 yard freestyle relay (3:06.65). FSU's men lost to Clemson 174-126.

Steinhauer won two more events in a 160-118 win over Florida Atlantic Feb. 8. The win was FSU's school record best 16th win of the season. FSU's men won 178-98.

Steinhauer won the 50 yard freestyle (23.72) and the 100 yard freestyle (51.78). Carr was third in the 100 yard freestyle (53.72) and fourth in the 100 yard backstroke (1:08.83).

Holway was third in the 100 yard butterfly (52.23) and second in the 50 yard freestyle (21.48).

Steinhauer finished ninth in the 50 yard freestyle at last weekend's Atlantic Coast Championship, missing the finals by two one-hundreths of a second (23.19). She was also the lead leg on FSU's fourth place finish in the 200 yard freestyle relay (1:31.97).

Atzhorn placed in four events in a 189-105 loss to 12th-ranked Georgia and 184-116 to Alabama. Atzhorn was second in the 400 yard individual medley (4:07.02). He was also the third leg on USC's fifth place finish in the 200 yard medley relay (1:36.64). He was sixth in the 200 yard backstroke (1:52.96), was ninth in the 100 yard backstroke (52.71).

Atzhorn was the third leg on South Carolina's 800 yard freestyle relay (6:40.51) during last weekend's Southeastern Conference Championships in Tuscaloosa. He was also 25th in the 200 yard individual medley (1:52.77) and 28th in the 400 yard individual medley (4:01.61).

University of Alabama Birmingham left fielder Phillip Bell (c/o '04) had hits in all three games of a season-opening series last weekend in Birmingham.

Bell went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and two RBIs in UAB's 8- 7 win Friday. Bell had a hit, an RBI and two runs scored in an 11-10 win on Saturday and went 1-for-4 in a 3-2 loss in game two of the doubleheader.

Katie Dollinger (c/o '06) helped the Rice University track team win the 15-team Leonard Hilton Memorial meet in Houston on Jan. 16.

Dollinger was 16th in the weight throw (38-10.5) and 16th in the shot put (37-2.25).

Dollinger was 10th in the shot put (39-1.25) at the University of Houston's Bayou City Classic Feb. 9. She was also 14th in the weight throw (41-8.75).

At the Houston Invitational on Feb. 1-2, Dollinger was 11th in the shot put (39-4) and 12th in the weight throw (42-2.75).

Chrissy Helvenston (c/o '06) placed second in four events for the Rhodes swim team against Hendrix and Suwanee on Jan. 25.

She was second in the 100 yard backstroke (1:07.49), the 200 yard backstroke (2:26.37) and was a part of Rhodes' second place 200 yard medley relay (2:01.45) and 200 yard freestyle relay teams (1:49.01).

Helvenston was the anchor leg on Rhodes' 12th place 800 yard freestyle relay (8:40.39) at the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference meet Feb. 13 at Southlake, Texas. She was also 14th in the 100 yard backstroke (1:05.70) and 16th in the 200 yard backstroke (2:23.75).

Helvenston was also the anchor leg on Rhodes' 400 yard medley relay team (3:55.48). Rhodes finished fourth in the nine team meet.

Brock Sakey (c/o '05), who started out as the number five singles player for University of Central Florida's tennis team, has moved up to number three.

Sakey beat UAB's Tyrone Ewels in a third-set tiebreaker Saturday, his first match at number three. Sakey has a 4-3 singles record so far this season. Of the three singles losses, two of them include a tiebreaker loss.

He and doubles partner Johan Beigart are 3-4 on the season. Two of those losses were to nationally ranked teams (13th ranked Florida, 26th ranked Miami).

Jay Schmitz (c/o '07) took sixth place in the 100 yard butterfly (59.19) for Rollins College in a 58-37 win over St. Leo and a 58-37 loss to the University of Tampa Jan. 19.

Schmitz placed in two events in a 140-60 loss to Savannah College of Art and Design on Jan. 26. Schmitz was the third leg on Rollins' 200 yard medley team that placed third (1:49.73) and was sixth in the 100 yard butterfly (59.23).

Schmitz was the lead leg on Rollins' winning 200 yard medley relay team (1:43.26) and was third in the 100 yard butterfly (1:00.46) in Rollins' 138-48 win over Florida Southern on Feb. 2.

Morgan Tibbs (c/o '07) was sixth in the 100 yard breaststroke (1:16.48) and was seventh in the 500 (5:40.65) and 1,000 yard freestyle (11:31.85) in Florida Gulf Coast University's 134-107 win over North Florida Jan. 18.

Tibbs was then sixth in the 1,650 yard freestyle (19:24.40) and ninth in the 500 yard freestyle (5:54.01) in a 204-84 win over Campbell and a 150.5- 149.5 loss to Georgia Southern on Jan. 19.

Tibbs was then seventh in the 1,000 yard freestyle (11:29.20), eighth in the 100 yard breaststroke (1:17.47), and 10th in the 100 yard butterfly (1:06.07) in a 165-74 win over Florida International and a 169- 70 loss to Miami on Jan. 26.

Tibbs was then 11th in the 500 yard freestyle (5:43.23) in a 242- 58 loss to Florida Atlantic on Feb. 2.

Kim Tryon (c/o '06) has broken Rhodes College's indoor pole vault record twice this season.

At the Engineer Invitational at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology in Terre Haute, Ind. on Jan. 26, Tryon was fourth in the pole vault (10-0) and fourth in the triple jump (32-2). She also finished ninth in the 55 meter hurdles (9.65), missing the finals by six one-hundreths of a second. Rhodes finished third in the seven-team meet.

Tryon then broke the school record with a leap of 10-10 at the Bob Keck Invitational at Illinois Wesleyan in Bloomington, Ill. on Feb. 9. She was also eighth in the prelims of the 55 meter hurdles (9.08).

Tryon bested her pole vault mark with a leap of 11-1 at the DePauw Indoor Classic Feb. 16 in Greencastle, Ind. She was also 11th in the prelims for the 55 meter hurdles (9.14).
