It wasn't what several Dolphin soccer seniors had in mind when it came to winning their final game together - but it'll have to do.
Richard Benson, Leland Davis, Brad Parrish, Kyle Losoya and Josh Pagonis represented the Dolphins on the East squad in the Pensacola Sports Association's second annual All Star game Feb. 20 at Brosnaham Park. The East team, comprised of the best seniors from Santa Rosa and Okaloosa Counties, rolled over the West (Escambia County) 5-0.
It was the first time the quintet played together since the Dolphins' state title loss to Nease. Benson, who tied a school-record with 15 shutouts in goal, was named the East side's Most Valuable Player, scoring a goal in the final minute of the match.
Benson and Navarre keeper Zach O'Hara went in as forwards with the East holding a 4- 0 lead. Fort Walton's Sean Reynolds took a free kick several yards outside the West's penalty box. The shot onehopped the West keeper and Benson ran in and headed the loose ball into the net.
The West gave up an own goal in the second minute before Navarre's Robby Elsas scored off a pass from Davis in the eighth minute. Navarre's Jacob Hardison made it 3-0 in the 25th minute, scoring off a pass from Pace's Ross Wyatt. Another Wyatt pass set up a goal for Niceville's Donnie Dorenkamp in the 28th minute.
Catholic's Louis Hines, who has played with GBHS players for Bayside in recent years, was the MVP of the West team. Former Dolphin Kian Michcki (Catholic) also played for the West side.
The East girls team, which included GBHS' Ashley Collins and Noelle Robles, beat the West 5-2.
Veronika Wolfkeil from Niceville was named the East's MVP. The University of Alabama signee scored two goals and assisted on two others. Catholic's Courtney Jenista, who's signed with Stetson, was the West's MVP. She scored a goal in the loss.
Wolfkeil's first goal came in the fourth minute, scoring off a pass from Niceville teammate Kylie Ochsenreiter.
Niceville's Jessa Weekley made it 2-0 in the 13th minute when she finished off a pass from Wolfkeil.
Jenista scored to cut the East's lead to 2-1 before the Eastsiders scored three unanswered goals.
Wolfkeil scored off a Robles pass in the 36th minute for a 3-1 lead. A pair of UWF signees teamed up on the fourth goal when Robles set up a goal for Fort Walton's Jordan Stone.
Robles scored in the 55th minute off a pass from Wolfkeil before two University of South Alabama signees combined on the final goal. PHS' Jordan Praylow scored off a pass from Tate's Kristin Sutton.
Lady Dolphin fan Lindsey Williams (when she's not playing for Washington), also played for the West team. She's signed with the University of Florida.
Gabby DeVries, who signed with Florida Atlantic, was the lone Navarre representative for the East team. Collins played the first half in goal for the Eastsiders before playing in the field in the second half.
