Dolphins open season with extra inning win
Catholic took a 5-0 lead into the third inning after the Dolphins were not able to muster one hit and committed four throwing errors. Thomas Dorsey was pulled just two outs into the second inning for Cody Warford. The Dolphins began to chip away at the lead in the top of the third inning when T.J. Jordan advanced to second on a wild pitch after being hit by a pitch. Jordan then advanced to third on an infield hit by Cameron Brunty. He then scored on another wild pitch to make it 5-1. The Dolphins made their move in the top of the fifth. Shane Dorlag advanced to second when his popup was dropped by the second basemen. He advanced to third on a fly out to center by Jordan and scored on a passed ball that walked Brandon Scott to make the score 5-2. Scott then scored on a Kolton Hanke double down the right field line. Corey Downs then hit a tworun homer off the scoreboard in left center field to score Hanke and tie the score at 5-5. The score did not stay tied for long as Kris Matsoukas followed with an opposite field shot to right field to give the Dolphins their first lead of the game at 6-5. In the bottom of the sixth, Warford walked the first two Crusader batters. He struck out the next batter but hit the next one to load the bases. A bases clearing double to right center field made it 8-6. Scott then replaced Warford on the mound and was able to stop the bleeding. The Dolphins tied it back up in the top of the sixth inning when Brunty and Scott walked. Brunty scored on a wild throw by the pitcher on a Hanke bunt. Two batters later Scott scored to tie the game at 8-8 on a fielding error by the second basemen on a Matsoukas grounder. Scott retired the Catholic hitters in order in the bottom of the sixth inning. In the top of the seventh, the Dolphins had the bases loaded after Brunty was intentionally walked with was intentionally walked with runners on second and third, but Hanke grounded out to the shortstop to end the inning. The game went into extra innings and the Dolphins took the lead in the top of the eighth as Hanke singled to left to lead off. Kyle Schnackenberg pinch ran for him and advanced to third on a pickoff attempt that was thrown into right field. Corey Downs then got to first on a dropped third strike. Schnackenberg scored on a Matsoukas sacrifice bunt, and Downs advanced to second. Downs moved up to third on a wild pitch and scored on a Dane Monnin groundout. In the bottom of the eighth, Scott retired the first batter on a groundout, but then he allowed a double to centerfield. He sat down the last two batters including a strikeout to end the game. Dolphin ninth graders score runs, but start season winless The Dolphin ninth grade team averaged five runs a game in four games during the Escambia Tournament last week, but were unable to record a win. Escambia ninth grade 5, Dolphins 4 Michael Mann hit a three-run homer, but Gulf Breeze scored only one other run in a loss to the host team Feb. 13. Justin Ratte and Tyler Dobson scored on Mann's round-tripper. Milton ninth grade 9, Dolphins 5 Brandon Sorenson and Taylor Webb both had two hits in a loss to Milton Thursday. Trip Rowe singled and scored twice, while Dallas Biederman allowed five hits and seven runs in the loss. Tate ninth grade 10, Dolphins 2 Ratte and Dobson singled and scored Gulf Breeze's run in a loss to Tate Friday. Mann added an RBI groundout, while Sorenson struck out six, but gave up seven hits in two innings. Niceville ninth grade 13, Dolphins 8 Gulf Breeze led 7-3 after two innings before the Eagles scored two in the third and four in the fourth and fifth Saturday. Mann hit a three-run homer and went 2-for-2 and scored twice, while Ratte went 3-for-4 with a double and scored twice. Sorenson went 2-for-4 and scored once.
