Dolphin hoop seasons come to a close
Also this week five years ago, the GBHS boys and girls soccer teams qualified for state for what was, at the time, the second time in school history. Both teams lost in the semifinals, but what was more infamous, was how the girls lost (read on). Editorial Note - First names of several GBHS athletes were unknown at press time. 1973 - The Dolphins finished with a 12-15 record with a 105-72 loss to Niceville, who had six players in double figures. Tommy Pugh and David Napier had 18 points each in the loss. 1978 - Kevin Giddis had 13 points as the defending district champion Dolphins lost to Crestview 43-35 in the district tournament. GBHS finished 13- 13. The Dolphin golf team took third out of four teams in a golf match at Santa Rosa Shores Country Club. Barry Dean led the Dolphins with a 42. The GBHS boys tennis team beat PHS 7-0, while the girls won 5-2. Peter Weeks, at number one singles, and Reed Kimball, at number five, both won by 6-0, 6-2 scores. Mary Grafton, playing number one singles, won 6-0, 6- 0. 1983 - Steve Gouner scored 20 points as the Dolphins beat Bay 65-44 in the opening round of the district tournament. GBHS then lost to Milton 37-30 behind 20 more from Gouner. The Dolphins finished the season 14-12. The GBHS boys tennis team beat Escambia 7-0, while the girls won 5-2. Chris Bloomberg, playing number three singles, won 6-0, 6-0, while the number one doubles team of Charles Grafton and Sean Hickerson also won 6-0, 6-0. The Dolphin boys golf team, led by Bisceglio's and Holiday's 38s, won a four-team match at Tiger Point. The girls track team won a three-team meet in Panama City. Hawkes won the 110 (15.36) and 330 (50.6) hurdles, while Dubose won the 880 (2:55.1), Patterson won the high jump (4-8) and Brodie won the long jump (15-11). Droogsma won the shot put (47-11.75) and the discus (156- 1). 1988 - The Dolphins lost to Escambia 73-54 in the opening round of the district tournament. Clay Cibula and Tom Baker both had 13 for the Dolphins, who finished the season 10-14. Shane Walker threw a threehitter and struck out eight as the Dolphin baseball team beat Crestview 2-1. Gayle Curry had the game-winning hit. The Dolphin tennis team beat PHS 6-1, while the girls won 4- 3. Bachman, playing number two singles, won 6-1, 6-1, while Allen, at number four singles, won an 8-0 pro set. Grassie, playing number two singles, won 6-0, 6-3. The GBHS boys tennis team beat Niceville 5-2, while the girls lost 4-3. McGrew, playing number two singles, won 6-3, 6-0, while the number two doubles team of Blazer and Allen, won 8-1. The girls number two doubles team lost 12-10. The GBHS track teams both won a three-team meet at Pace. Kline won the 330 hurdles (42.49) and teamed up with Lamar, Pell and Tucker to win the 440 relay (46.27). Shane won the mile (4:49) and the two mile (10:51.39), while Cuis won the discus (134- 6). Waite won three events for the Lady Dolphins - the 440 (1:05), the 880 (2:43.85) and teamed up with Bentley, Delavan and Embree to win the mile relay (4:38.37). Bentley also won the 110 hurdles (16.22) and the high jump (4- 11), while Cole won the 220 (29.98), Wasson the shot put (26-9.25). Mike Detoro and Taylor Kendrick both shot 38s as the Dolphin golf team won a fourteam match in Defuniak Springs. 1993 - The Dolphins closed the regular season with a 69-59 win over Century. David Satterwhite had 21 points, while Shannon Jeffries had 15. Satterwhite scored 18 straight Dolphin points in the second and third quarter and finished with 27 in a 59-45 district tournament opening loss to Crestview. The Dolphins finished 11-18. 1998 - Edegard Borges set the all-time Dolphin single season goal scoring record with a four-goal effort in a 9-0 win over Pine Forest. That gave Borges 40 goals, breaking the old record of Tommy Sweeney (36). Bob West had two goals, while Beto Bressiani, Kevin White and Leo Pacheco scored once. Triplett and Sebold had the lone hits in the Lady Dolphin softball team s 4-1 loss to Pace. The Lady Dolphins gave up three runs in the sixth inning in a 6-2 loss to Tate. Angela Fowler became one of the first three signees to the newly formed PJC volleyball team. Ross Sakey and Kristen Smith Norris made it to the final of the 10-year-old and the 12-year-old finals of the Carrington Junior Invitational at the Pensacola Country Club. The Lady Dolphin soccer team won the Southeastern Conference Tournament in Panama City, beating McGill- Toolen 9-0 and Panama City Mosley 3-0. Lacey Clay and Clay had two goals against McGill Toolen, while Shanna Van Slyke had two assists. Baldasan, Abby Zito and Davis all scored once, while Baldasan and Nikki Matsoukas had assists against Mosley. Michala Nowak had two second places and three thirds in the 8-under division of the Polar Bear Swim Fest. Candace Knowles had four first places and five second places in the 10-under division. Daniel Shull was third in the 25 yard breaststroke in the 8- under division, while Matt Shull won three events and took two thirds in the 10-under division. Kyle Cormier won nine events in the 11-12 year old division. Clint Provost and Jenny Tidwell both shot 37s to lead the GBHS golf teams to a win over Fort Walton Beach. 2003 - The Lady Dolphin soccer team advanced to their fifth consecutive state tournament, only to have missed call by the officials keep them from their fourth consecutive title game. Land O'Lakes beat GBHS 2- 1 in double overtime, moments after a missed hand ball call on a Land O'Lakes defender (who punched the ball out of the goal) would've given Gulf Breeze a 2-1 lead in the final minute of overtime. Shannon Wing scored the lone goal for Gulf Breeze, whose senior class finished their prep careers with a 121-9- 5 mark. Wing and Jessica Van Slyke scored off assists from Brandi Adams and Annie Adams in their 2-0 regional final win at Bishop Kenny. Back in Gulf Breeze, the boys team won a roller coaster regional final against Bishop Kenny. After the visitors scored in overtime to go up 4-3, Rhett Gross' header in the final 30 seconds tied it at 4. Gulf Breeze would go on to win the game in penalty kicks, as Keith Savage was credited with the game-winning goal, his third of the game. The Dolphins would lose to Nease 4-1 in the state semifinals. Freshman Herre Echsner broke up the shutout bid with a goal with 1:07 left. The Dolphin basketball team, who had clinched their first playoff berth since 1995, lost to Bay 58-45 in the district title game, then lost at Quincy Shanks 63-56 in the regional quarterfinals. Michael Perkinson scored 12 points to lead GBHS (11-19) against Bay, while Dan Watts' 23 points (including five threepointers) led the Dolphins against Shanks. Florida State Seminole to be DeCody Fagg led the Dolphins with 23 points. Steven Cheney threw a threehit shutout as the Dolphins blanked Pace 3-0 in the Catholic Invitational. It was Gulf Breeze's first win over Pace in six years. Juston Takacs' single scored Buddy Burks to give the Dolphins the lead for good. The Dolphins then lost to Milton 9-7 on a two-run, walk off homer. Matt Fox and Burks both had two hits in that game. Athree-run triple in the top of the seventh was the difference as the Lady Dolphins lost 5-3 to Pace. Kathryn Sheppard, Kristen Milam and Brittany Naggatz scored in the loss. Jessica O'Connor won two events and was second in two others as the Lady Dolphin track team lost a close three-team meet at Pace. Milton finished with 61.5 points, followed by Pace (59.5) and Gulf Breeze (56). O'Connor won the 100 meter hurdles (16.4) and was part of the winning 4x400 meter relay team with Adrianne Smith, Jacobi Wade and Sarah Sise. Sise also won the 800 meter run (2:46), while Sarah Richey won the pole vault (9-0) and the 300 meter hurdles (50.52). Emily Custred took first in the mile (6:03.85). Daniel Kostic had the lone win on the boys side, winning the 100 meter dash (11.5). The weightlifting team won every weight class in a 72-16 win over Jay. Winners for the Dolphins were - Mitchell Cook (119 lb. class - 230 lbs. lifted), Daniel Johnson (129 - 315), Steven Whippler (139 - 470), Casey Torak (154 - 395), David Richey (169 - 405), Daniel Kostic (183 - 500), Joey Davidson (199 - 530), Alby Lindon (219 - 565), Kelly Womack (238 - 455) and Josh Nichols (heavyweight - 590). |
