Letters to the Editor I had to write to you and thank you for your column, "Back in Time." It brings back fond memories when my son and his friends at Gulf Breeze High School played sports during those fun years, especially 1978. Kevin Giddis, my son, played three sports and was a little disappointed that I would not let him play football until his senior year. The other two sports, basketball and golf, I thought, was enough. Furthermore, I was afraid he would get hurt playing football. I am passing the news article to him in Tennessee, where he lives and works. Please continue to do the great job you are doing. Donna M. Giddis Gulf Breeze Zoo calendar sales make a difference We wish to thank you for participating in the zoo's fundraising campaign by selling 2008 Zoo Calendars. We are very grateful for the support of businesses in the community who agreed to assist with this fundraiser, and are pleased to report that it was quite successful. As you know, The Zoo- Northwest Florida is an important educational and recreational attraction for families and schoolchildren in our community as well as a significant contributor to the region's tourism and economy. Contributions help support our mission of providing quality animal exhibits, education programs and wildlife conservation programs. The board of directors and staff gratefully acknowledge the donations received from the community as well as the many phone calls and letters of support, which often include fond memories of family visits to the zoo over the years. The zoo is a nonprofit organization and contributions are tax-deductable. On behalf of all the staff and animals, thanks again for your support. We hope you can visit the zoo soon! Danyelle L. Lantz Executive Director The Zoo-Northwest Florida Business relationships are worthwhile In today's troubled business climate, I must share a rather unusual occurrence to exemplify why some businesses are thriving and others are closing. Last week, I went to the Alltel store at Tiger Point for a second service call on my cell phone battery. This was a Saturday afternoon, and they were certainly not busy. I asked to buy a new battery and while the employee was getting it ready, I asked to use the bathroom. I was somewhat surprised when she said "NO," and I actually thought she was kidding. I asked again, and she replied very firmly that it was a company policy. I probably would have understood if she had exhibited some sympathy. I explained that I had been an Alltel customer for over 10 years and felt that I should just dismiss purchasing the battery and close the account. The answer was a straightforward, "OK" The following Monday, I went to the Nextel store in Tiger Point. Being lighthearted, I asked what their policy was on customer use of the bathroom. They were incredulous as to the Alltel story. On the other end of the customer service spectrum- Nextel (USA Digital, Cindy Dollar) set up the new account for three phones and delivered them to my business as well as taking great lengths to explain the features. Needless to say, I'm out of the Alltel circle of friends. Randy Spencer Gulf Breeze |
