Brown returns to dazzle local audiences Saturday night Ashley Brown, star of the hit Broadway production of Mary Poppins, will perform with the Pensacola Symphony Orchestra and special guests the Pensacola Children's Chorus Saturday, Feb. 9 at Olive Baptist Church. The concert is Brown's first major appearance in Pensacola since starring as the title character in the new Broadway production of Mary Poppins. The program will include a mix of Disney and Broadway favorites, including music from shows that have launched her career, Beauty and the Beast and Mary Poppins.

Brown has received five nominations for her role in Mary Poppins including the Outer Critics Circle Award nomination for Outstanding Actress in a Musical, the Drama League Award nominations for Distinguished Performance, the Drama Desk Award nomination for Outstanding Actress in a Musical and the Broadway.com Audience Award nomination for Favorite Onstage Pair with Gavin Lee.

UWF showcases DeDeaux

The University of West Florida (UWF) Center for Fine and Performing Arts (CFPA) and Department of Art present new media artist, Dawn DeDeaux, in a solo exhibition Feb. 8 through March 2 in the UWF Art Gallery in the CFPA, Building 82. An artist lecture will be held Feb. 7 from 3 to 4 p.m. and an opening reception will be held Feb. 8 from 4 to 6 p.m. in the UWF Art Gallery. Gallery hours are Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and one hour prior to all CFPA events. Admission to the gallery and events are free and open to the public. The exhibit is sponsored by Contract Resources of Pensacola.

Considered a premier artist in the new media genre, DeDeaux's works have been exhibited widely throughout the United States, and she has been featured in textbook and journal publications, as well as on televised broadcasts.

Also included in this exhibit are some of her post-Katrina works that reflect the devastation of New Orleans where she lives and works. "Hurricane Suite in Nine Movements" is a floor-based sculpture that incorporated two tons of shattered glass and electric light.

GBHS Drama Club presents 'Steel Pier'

The Gulf Breeze High School Drama Club will perform the musical "Steel Pier" at the University of West Florida (UWF) Center for Performing Arts, located in building 82 on the UWF campus on Feb. 15 and 16. Showtime for both nights is 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $15 and can be purchased through the UWF box office by calling 850-857-6285 or going online to www.uwf.edu/theatre/boxoffice. Tickets may also be purchased at the front office of Gulf Breeze High School located at 675 Gulf Breeze Parkway, Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Exploreum hosts 'The Universe Within'

The highly anticipated human anatomy exhibit OUR BODY: The Universe Within opened Friday, Jan. 11, 2008 at the Gulf Coast Exploreum Science Center, offering thousands of visitors a chance to witness firsthand the elegant design of the human body's form and function in a compelling and dignified environment. Within the first week, more than 4,000 people visited the Exploreum and experienced the line-up of human health programming available throughout the facility.
