Unseeded Jacqueline Kasler captured the 18s Florida sectional title Jan. 14 at the City of Tampa Tennis Complex at Hillsborough Community College, beating four seeded players in the process.

Kasler defeated No. 4 seed Cassandra Herzberg 7-5, 6-2 to vanquish her fourth seed on a list that included No. 5 seed Carling Seguso, No. 3 seed Olivia Janowicz and No. 7 seed Danielle Collins.

Seguso is the daughter of Robert Seguso, who won four Grand Slam doubles tournaments in the 1980s.

At the 32-player national draw (known as the Tennis Plaza Cup), the third-seeded Kasler lost to eventual champion (and the 99th-ranked junior player in the world) Mallory Burdette in the quarterfinals 6-3, 6-2. Kasler led 3-2 early in the first set.

Kasler then came back to win twice in the consolation #2 bracket. She beat Brynn Boren in three sets before beating Jenna Doerfler 6-1, 6-1

Kasler, who is currently being homeschooled, will play tennis for Gulf Breeze High, starting Feb. 11 at Arnold. She'll be a fulltime GBHS student in the fall.
