Lady Dolphins close regular season with two wins

The Gulf Breeze Lady Dolphin basketball team snapped an eight-game losing streak last week with a pair of wins. The Lady Dolphins (7-14) defeated Central 38-23 Jan. 22 in Allentown before pulling out a 51-47 overtime win at Escambia the next night.

Tobie Bass nearly outscored the Lady Jaguars by herself, scoring a career-high 19 points to lead Gulf Breeze to victory.

Central (15-6), with only seven players, took an early 2-0 lead, but the Lady Dolphins closed out the quarter scoring 14 of the next 16 points. Bass scored the first six points of the game.

Gulf Breeze kept a double digit lead in the second quarter behind the play of Bass, who scored four points in that period. GBHS led 20-10 at the half.

Natalie Alverson had six points and five assists in the win, while Jamie Beeler added five, Sarah Munsch four and Christine Hay and Morgan Bass two each.

With the team shorthanded (Deannette Zuniga and Jordan Smith out with injuries), team manager Nicole Helmick suited up for the game. She played the final two minutes, grabbing one rebound.

Munsch scored a season-high 13 points and grabbed 12 rebounds, while Tobie Bass had 13 points and 13 rebounds as Gulf Breeze used some late free throws to beat Escambia.

Hay finished with nine points, including three free throws in the extra period. Beeler added nine points, while Anndrea Marsh had four, Alverson two and Morgan Bass one. Alverson had five assists in the win, while Beeler had three.

A Kasey Landfair free throw and a GBHS steal in the closing moments were the difference as Gulf Breeze edged Escambia to finish with an 8-10 record.

Emily Chastain had 11 points, while Madeleine Walden had 10.

Gulf Breeze took on Milton Tuesday (after the News' deadline) in the opening round of the District 1-4A Tournament at the old Woodham High School.

Undefeated Pensacola High, the host school (their gym won't be ready until after the season), will play the winner today.
