National Seashore recruiting beach rescue lifeguards

Gulf Islands National Seashore Superintendent Jerry Eubanks announced today that the Park is recruiting for its Beach Rescue Lifeguard Program in both the Florida and Mississippi Districts. The Park plans to hire two seasonal Lifeguards and one Lead Lifeguard at each of the following three locations: Perdido Key Area in Florida, Opal Beach Area in Florida, and West Ship Island in Mississippi.

Applicants must be 18 years of age when they come on duty and have current certifications for Lifeguard, CPR, and Basic First Aid. Applicants will be required to pass a performance test that includes a 600-yard swim in less than 10 minutes, simulated rescues and escapes, proficiency in CPR, and a 125-foot underwater swim with a total of four breaths.

"Employment as a Lifeguard with the Park is a great opportunity to earn extra money for college or for the summer. The starting salary, depending on experience, is $11.34 - $14.72 per hour," said Superintendent Eubanks. Lifeguards will receive on the job training for Open Water Rescue (USLA) and First Responder (National Registry) courses. Those interested in applying should contact the Park's personnel job line at 850-934-2601 or obtain information online at www.usajobs.opm.gov.
