'93 Gulf Breeze Middle School cheerleaders excel at national meet
A total of 7,000 cheerleaders competed in the meet. The GBMS squad included - Cara Baker, Lynn Bartholomew, Samantha Chandler, Cori Corbari, Staci Corley, Paige Gray, Tammy Huggins, Miranda Joyner, Amanda Myers, Morgan Martin, Sonya Nash, Jililan Nettles, Brandi Schluter, Amy Tonetti and Paige Zaluski. Coaches were Cyndey Joyner, Janet Myers, Jan Corley, Bridget Reynolds, Mary Hurd and Becky George. 1973 - The Dolphins lost to Catholic 76-59 at Chumuckla. Tommy Pugh scored 29 points, while Ed Daniel had 10. Gulf Breeze used a 27-8 second quarter to pull away from Foley 76-58. Pugh had 25, Steve Elbert 18 and Daniel 13 for the Dolphins (6-7), who shot 18-for-23 from the foul line. 1978 - The Dolphins got to within four points late in the game before losing 73-65 to Pine Forest. Jimmy Watts had 19 points, while Kevin Boggs had 14. Both GBHS teams then lost to Choctaw. Kevin Giddis had 13 points and Watts 11 in the boys' 67-47 loss, while Laurie Anderson had 23 in the Lady Dolphins' 42-41 loss. Gulf Breeze fell to 6-9 on the season. 1983 - Ricky Wirth and Christian Knorr both scored in the Dolphins' 3-1 win over Pine Forest. The Dolphins improved to 5-5 on the season. Steve Gouner scored 37 points, while Ken Harley added 15 as the Dolphins defeated Washington 73-64. Harley went 8-for-13 from the field and finished with 17 points as the Dolphins beat Pace 51-39. Gouner added 16 points. Kelly Hippard scored 16 points as the Lady Dolphins lost 52-38 to Pace. Tracey Givens scored 10 points as GBHS lost to Woodham 43-34. Givens scored eight in Gulf Breeze's 33-32 loss to PHS. The Lady Tigers won the game with two free throws with four seconds left. 1988 - The sixth-ranked Dolphin soccer team (10-2-2) played a 1-1 tie with Woodham before losing to Pine Forest 2-1. Victor Wright scored against Woodham, while Richard Stitch scored against the Eagles, who scored both of their goals on penalty kicks. Ryan Davenport and Doug Straguel both scored in the Dolphins' 4-2 loss to Washington. Jennifer Wasson led the Lady Dolphins to a pair of wins. She scored 20 in a 51-43 win over Milton and 17 in a 52-45 win over Rutherford. Kriss Embree had 19 and 14 in the two wins. Emily Pritchard scored three goals, while Deborah Salvatore and Stephanie Yancey both scored once as the Lady Dolphin soccer team edged Woodham 5-4. 1993 - Heather Hutchins scored all three goals, including the game-winner with 10 minutes left, as the Lady Dolphins defeated Woodham 3- 2. Aubrey Johnson and Tiffany Johnson both had assists. Aubrey Johnson scored the lone goal in a 4-1 loss to Washington, who improved to 21-0 on the season. Emily Morgan, the daughter of current Lady Wildcat coach Kenny Morgan, scored once for Washington. The Dolphin basketball team lost to ninth-ranked Crestview 62-35 despite a 26-point, 14- rebound effort from David Satterwhite. Dave Gallagher had 11 points for the Dolphins. In a 54-44 loss at Escambia, Satterwhite and Gallagher both had 14 points. Choctaw scored in the final minute to salvage a 1-1 tie with Gulf Breeze. Freshman Tommy Sweeney scored off a Jacob Baker assist. Kevin Flynn scored five goals and assisted on a sixth in the Dolphins' 10-0 win over Pine Forest. Chris Womack had two goals and two assists, while Benji Luke had two goals and an assist. Baker had three assists. Flynn scored three goals, while Sweeney had two goals and one assist in the Dolphins' 6-0 win over Milton. Brian Granse had a goal and two assists for the 13-3-2 Dolphins. Chasidy Fisher scored 11 points in the Lady Dolphins' 71-27 loss to Escambia. Fisher had 16 in the Lady Dolphins' 52-36 loss to Pine Forest. 1998 - Four Dolphins scored in double figures in a 65-61 loss to Central. Brian Mink had 14 points, while Jace Crooke had 13, Brian Cocoran 12 and Gary Wargo 10. Wargo had 16 points in Gulf Breeze's 63-48 loss to Washington. Magoli Solamano had 10 points in the Lady Dolphins' 51-33 loss to Central. Current GBHS ninth grade girls basketball coach Melissa Payne had 11 for Central. Bree Bolster had 24 points, while Crystal Eckles had 11 in the Lady Dolphins' 63-55 loss to Pace. Bob West, Matt Iburg and Edegard Borges all scored in the Dolphins' 3-0 win over Washington. The seventhranked Dolphins improved to 9- 0 on the season. Gulf Breeze resident Chelsea Welch broke the 1,000 point mark for Catholic in a 58-46 win over Crestview. Current Pace coach Jenny Condon is the school's all-time lead with 1,032 points. 2003 - The U.S. U-19 National soccer team was in town for a pair of exhibition matches, including one at Dolphin Stadium against a West Florida select squad. Gulf Breeze resident Todd Harper scored for West Florida, who lost the national team 3-1. In a rematch of the previous season's state title loss to Nease, the Lady Dolphins lost 1-0 to Nease, giving up a goal with seven minutes left. Annie Adams had four goals, while Brandi Adams had two goals and three assists as the senior duo celebrated Senior Night with an 8-0 win over Pine Forest. Jessica Van Slyke and senior Shannon Wing also scored in the win, while Lauren Pearcey, Caitlin Eggimann and Alisha Smith all had assists. Also honored before the game were Elizabeth Davis, Kiel Gross, Mandy Krietzberg and Laurin Parks. Brandi Adams had three goals, while Annie Adams had two goals and three assists in an 8-0 win over Milton. Van Slyke had a goal and an assist, while Eggimann and Megan Cotti had one goal each. Cecily Welsh, Wing and Smith all had helpers. The Dolphins got a goal from Keith Savage late in the first half to win their seventh straight match, 1-0, over Washington. Savage and Jordan Machesky both scored twice in a 7-0 win over Pine Forest. Tyler Story, Ronnie Johnson and Addie Salter all scored once, while Story and Montie Lewing had two assists. Savage and Brandon Johanson had one assist each. The Dolphins used a pair of buzzer-beaters to beat Navarre. Michael Perkinson's near-half court heave at the fourth quarter buzzer forced overtime, while Joey Mozur's 12-footer as time expired gave the Dolphins a 56- 54 win. Matt Forrest had 17 points in the win, while Perkinson had 13. Escambia went on a 42-4 run to beat the Dolphins 66-40. Dan Watts hit five three-pointers and finished with 17 points. Mozur had 16 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Dolphins to a 58-53 win over Ruby Gainer. Watts added 11 points. Mallary Campbell scored 16 points as the Lady Dolphins lost 55-46 to Central. Katie Dollinger added 13 points. Kristen Milam became the first Gulf Breeze High softball player to sign with Pensacola Junior College since 1999 (Shivan Kiker). |
