Baker cooks up late heroics

Tom Baker played the role of hero twice in as many games this week for the 1988 Dolphin basketball team.

In a 44-43 win over Pace, Baker hit two free throws with 17 seconds left. The win was the third for Gulf Breeze (7-6) over the Patriots. In their next game, a 58-57 win over Bay, Baker hit the game-winning three-pointer with two seconds left. Baker had 20 points in the win, while Clay Cibula added 19.

1973 - Ed Daniel scored 26 points, while Tommy Pugh added 19 and David Napier 15 as the Dolphins beat Foley 74- 64 at Escambia.

The win would be the first of three in a five days span as the Dolphins outscored Jay 16-8 in the fourth quarter of a 55-47 win. Pugh and Napier both had 14 in the win.

The Dolphins would outscore Crestview 30-19 in the second half of a 53-41 win. Daniel had 17 points, while Pugh had 11 and Alan Barnes 10. The Dolphins would even their record at 5-5 with the three-game win streak.

1978 - The Crestview Bulldogs shot a blistering 69 percent from the field in the second half to beat the Dolphins 70-55. Scott Boylan scored 23 points, while Kevin Boggs added 12.

The Dolphins then lost at Niceville 83-62. Jimmy Watts scored 20 points, while Kevin Giddis and Bart Sibley had 12 each.

The Lady Dolphins improved to 6-8 on the season with a 57-44 win over Milton. Melissa Seymer had 19 points, while Laura Anderson and Shellie Moody had 13 each.

1983 - Eric Burgin, Jay Tate, Christian Knorr and Everett Fenner all scored goals in the Dolphins' 4-2 win over Washington. The Dolphins improved to 3-5 and 1-1 in district play.

Kelly Hippard scored 20 points and grabbed 15 rebounds as Gulf Breeze upset fifthranked Jay 53-45. Suzanne Sharpe added 19 points and 11 rebounds as GBHS outscored Jay 19-9 in the fourth quarter.

Hippard had 15 points, while Sharpe had 12 points, eight rebounds, six assists and six steals in a 51-43 win over Foley.

The Lady Dolphins (5-5) then lost to Catholic 49-45. Hippard had 19 points, while Sharpe and Katheryn Parker had 10 each.

Steve Gourner scored 19 points for Gulf Breeze in a 52- 51 loss to Tate. The Aggies won the game with two free throws with 10 seconds left.

1988 - Jennifer Wasson scored 38 points and made eight three-pointers to lead the Lady Dolphins past Escambia 74-37. Kriss Embree added 12 points as GBHS improved to 9-4.

Mike Della Ratta scored in the first half, but Niceville scored the equalizer in the second half of a 1-1 tie.

1993 - Gulf Breeze scored three penalty kick goals to defeat Pace 4-1.

Jacob Baker, Corey Kaplan and Kevin Flynn scored all on PKs for the Dolphins (10-3-1, 8-0-1), while Baker set up the other goal for Benji Luke.

Kaplan had three goals and three assists, while Flynn had three goals and one assist in a 9- 1 win over Escambia.

David Satterwhite scored 26 points to lead the Dolphins to a 58-51 win over Milton. Shannon Jeffries had 12 points, while Dave Gallagher had 11.

Satterwhite had 19 points and 10 rebounds as the Dolphins rallied from 16 down before losing 61-58. Gallagher had 13 points, while Jeffries had 10.

The Dolphins outscored Catholic 12-5 in the fourth quarter of a 33-32 win. Satterwhite led the Dolphins (8- 7) with 13 points.

Chasidy Fisher had 22 points in a 62-37 loss at Jay. Fisher added 19 points for Gulf Breeze (1-12) in a 62-44 loss to Crestview.

PHS used a penalty kick with four minutes left to beat the Lady Dolphins 2-1. Aubrey Johnson scored for Gulf Breeze, who lost their first district game.

1998 - Bree Bolster scored 22 points, while Julie Dease added 16 in a 56-36 win over Woodham. The Lady Dolphins improved to 3-15 with the win.

Bolster scored 26 points, but Escambia outscored the Lady Dolphins 16-5 in the fourth quarter to beat Gulf Breeze 47-44.

Gary Wargo scored 11 points to lead the Dolphins in an 83-42 loss to Woodham.

Wargo scored 19 points, while Brian Cocoran added 10 as the Dolphins went 13-for-18 from the free throw line in the fourth quarter of a 58-49 win over Pine Forest.

Wargo led the Dolphins (3- 12) with 11 points in a 69-35 loss to Escambia.

Washington defeated the Lady Dolphins 4-1 in a matchup of state-ranked teams (Washington was tenth, GBHS sixth).

Freshman Holly Lee scored for the Lady Dolphins, who split a pair of games in a tournament at Jacksonville Fletcher. The Lady Dolphins lost 1-0 to the host team before blasting Stanton Prep 6-0.

Trish Martin had a hat trick against Stanton, while Shanna Van Slyke added two goals and Karen Clay one. Courtney Davis had an assist, while Nikki Matsoukas had the shutout in goal.

2003 - Dan Watts hit six three-pointers and finished with 22 points as the Dolphins beat Marianna 55-51. Joey Mozur had 13 points and nine rebounds.

Lauren Pearcey scored three goals, while Annie Adams had a goal and three assists in an 8-2 win over Pace.

Jenny Miller, Katie Schrock, Brie Lyons and Megan Cotti all scored, while Alisha Smith had two assists. Caitlin Eggimann, Cecily Welsh and Lyons all had one assist.

Keith Savage set up goals for Tyler Story, Brandon Johanson and Heath Williamson in a 3-0 win over Pace. The Dolphins improved to 15-5 on the season.

Freshman Katie Dollinger had 12 points as Gulf Breeze rallied from 16 down before losing to Tate 48-45 in overtime. Chelsey Adams scored 15 points, while Dollinger had 12 in a 58-50 win over Marianna.
