Jason Thompson/Gulf Breeze News Tobie Bass battles for rebounding position Saturday at Catholic.
The Gulf Breeze Lady Dolphin basketball team unfortunately began 2008 the way they ended 2007 - with a pair of losses.

Pace 49, Lady Dolphins 38

The Lady Patriots went on an 11-0 run over the final three minutes as GBHS missed its last seven shots in their second loss of the season to Pace Thursday.

Pace turned the ball over on each of their first six possessions, allowing Gulf Breeze to jump out to a 10-4 lead. Pace hit a pair of free throws in the closing seconds to cut the deficit to four (14-10). Pace, who have played without point guard Ashley Fabery for six weeks (elbow), took their first lead of the game at 19-16. Gulf Breeze responded with a 10-2 run to retake the lead at 26- 21. Tobie Bass scored all four of her points in that run.

The Lady Patriots would score the final five of the half to tie the game up at 26-26.

Morgan Bass scored off a pass from Beeler to give Gulf Breeze a seven point lead midway through the third quarter. But Pace would outscore the Lady Dolphins 23-5 the rest of the game.

Smith, who had nine rebounds, scored off a missed free throw to tie the game at 32 with 2:47 left. It would not only be the team's final points of the game, but the only 'second chance' points of the game for GBHS.

Conversely, Pace had 10 second chance points.

Zuniga finished with 12 points, five assists and four steals. Smith added eight points, while Alverson and Beeler had six each.

Tobie Bass had nine rebounds, while Beeler had three assists and Alverson and Papajohn had three steals each.

Gulf Breeze shot 48 percent from the field in the first half, but was 6-for-30 from the field in the second half (17 percent).

The Lady Crusaders (10-7) jumped out to a 17-4 first quarter lead Saturday on their way to avenging a loss to the Lady Dolphins earlier this season.

Alverson, who had seven points, scored off a pass from Beeler to tie the game at 2. But from there, Catholic scored 15 of the last 17 points of the quarter.

Gulf Breeze's shooting woes continued into the second quarter as Christine Hay, who scored nine off the bench, hit a three-pointer for the team's first points with 3:45 left. Catholic's lead was 14 (26-12) at the half.

A free throw by Tobie Bass, who had seven points and 13 rebounds, made it a 12-point game before Catholic went on an 11-4 run to end the third quarter with a 42-22 lead.
