Artel Gallery features Mardi Gras exhibit through Jan. 18

Get ready for Mardi Gras, an exhibit of festive masks made by Escambia County students. The exhibit runs through Jan. 18 at Artel Gallery in Pensacola. An opening reception will take place on Friday, Jan. 11, from 5 to 7 p.m. Approximately 65 masks from Tate, Escambia and West Florida high school students and Brentwood, N. B. Cook, Lipscomb, McArthur, Warrington and West Pensacola elementary students will be on display.

Artel is a not-for-profit educational gallery located at 505 South Adams Street near Seville Square and is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. For more information call the gallery at 850 432-3080 or visit Artel's website at artelgallery. org. PLT holds Kids Expo Saturday

Children and parents are invited to experience dance, theatre, visual arts and more at Pensacola Little Theatre's (PLT) ninth annual Kids Expo at the Pensacola Cultural Center.

On Saturday, Jan. 12, from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m., a variety of local organizations will demonstrate their arts through performances, hands-on activities and eye-catching displays. Parents will receive information about classes and other opportunities that help children develop their own talents.

Confirmed participants include PLT's Treehouse Theatre, Pensacola Museum of Art, Gulf Coast Renaissance Faire, Pensacola Jazz Society and Ballet Pensacola.

Admission to Kids Expo is free and open to the public. Programs are designed for children from kindergarten through high school. For additional information, contact PLT's Education Director, Katie McHugh at 850- 434-0257.

In addition to the Kids Expo, PLT's Studio 400 season opens Jan. 10 with the hilarious comedy "T Bone N Weasel" by playwright Jon Klein."T Bone N Weasel" is playing for two weekends: Jan. 10-12, at 8 p.m.; Jan. 18-19, at 8 p.m. and a final show will take place Jan. 20 at 2:30 p.m.

Tickets are $12 for café seating and $8 for general admission and can be purchased at the box office or by phone at 850-432- 2042. Studio 400 is Pensacola Little Theatre's forum for edgy and alternative theatre. "T Bone N Weasel" contains adult themes and mature subject matter and is not appropriate for all audiences. Pensacola Junior College invites members of the community to try out for "The Hairy Ape."

Auditions are 7 p.m. Monday and Tuesday, Jan. 14-15, at the Ashmore Fine Arts Auditorium, Building 8, on the Pensacola campus.

Production of the Eugene O'Neill play calls for 10 men and 10 women. All ages and physical types are needed. Actors may play multiple roles, including animals. Be ready for cold readings.

The Pensacola Children's Chorus, under the direction of Susan and Allen Pote, will hold auditions for boys and girls in third grade, this month.

The audition schedule is as follows:

Wednesday, Jan. 16, 3:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. - boys and girls in third grade are invited to audition for the preparatory choir called Choristers.

All auditions take place at the Margaret Moore Nickelsen Center, located on the campus of First Presbyterian Church at 46 East Chase Street in downtown Pensacola. It is not necessary to make an individual appointment and auditionees do not need to bring a prepared song.

The University of West Florida will host comedian Jim Breuer Jan. 23 at 8:30 p.m. in the UWF Field House. The event is open to the public. Tickets cost $10.75 per person for UWF students and $21.75 per person for the public.

Breuer spent four years on "Saturday Night Live" and then performed in the film "Half- Baked." He has also appeared on "Chappelle's Show" and several Comedy Central specials. Breuer is currently on a college comedy tour, which will visit 20 colleges throughout the United States.
