Gulf Breeze Hospital Auxiliary to hold uniform sale
Gulf Breeze Hospital Auxiliary will hold a uniform and shoe sale on Thursday, Jan. 17, from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the hospital lobby. Gulf Breeze Optimists
Gulf Breeze Optimists celebrated the conclusion of their Christmas tree sale by awarding two grand prizes to raffle ticket buyers. Susan Martinez and her family won a weekend in an elegant Portofino condo. Martinez is an assistant state attorney in Pensacola. Her husband, Gregory Wilhelm, is an assistant district attorney in Tallahassee. Their daughter, Susan, is a Michigan State University student and her sister, Erika, is a senior at Gulf Breeze High School and a Junior Optimist.
Corlee Costello and her family, Gulf Breeze residents for 11 years, won a lavish gift basket. Her husband, Joe, is a Lt. Cmdr. in the U.S. Navy. Their children, Brad, Jack and Kate Reagan, are students in Gulf Breeze.
The prizes were donated and all proceeds from the raffle and Christmas tree sale go to help the community's youth in scholarships, awards, grants and any other needs that arise.
Gulf Isle Neighbors
Gulf Isle Neighbors (GIN) will host its annual fundraiser, Flash 'n Fashion, on March 12 at the Mustin Beach Officers' Club, at NAS Pensacola. The event will feature a luncheon and fashion show benefiting The Zoo-Northwest Florida and the Salvation Army. Brenda Carraway of Fashion Connection will present fashionsDoor prizes, raffles, and 50/25/25 will be included. A wonderfu assortment of gift baskets will also be raffled to benefit charities. GIN has over 100 members that work hard to give to local charities. Doors open at 10:30 a.m., lunch is at 12 p.m. and the fashion show is at 1 p.m. Tickets are $25 per person. The regular third Tuesday meeting of the Pensacola Camellia Club (PCC) will be held on Jan. 15, at 7 p.m., at the Garden Center, located at 1850 North 9th Ave. in Pensacola. Dr. Bill Bennett, host of the TV show "Garden Magic," will discuss micro-jet-spray irrigation systems. Attendees are invited to bring in unidentified blooms. Experts are available to help name them. There will be books, permanent identification tags and garden tools for sale. Light refreshments will be served.

Free camellia workshop and plant sale will be at the Northeast YMCA, located at 3215 Langley Ave. in Pensacola, from 9 a.m. until 12 p.m. on Saturday Feb. 16. There will be Camellia pruning, airlayering and grafting demonstrations. Attendees are invited to bring in unidentified blooms for experts to name. There will be books, permanent metal identification tags and garden tools for sale.

The March 18 program by nurseryman and PCC member John Davy will be on newer alternative grafting techniques. All regular meetings are on the third Tuesday at the Garden Center at 7 p.m. The April 15 program, also by John Davy, will be on camellia air-layering and propagation by cuttings.

"Even if you can't make a single meeting, membership is still a bargain because the newsletter gives valuable tips on camellia care for the entire year," Eade said.
Judge Roger Vinson is secretary of the ACS, headquartered in Fort Valley, Ga. and Skip Vogelsang is the newly appointed membership chair of the ACS for the North Florida and Panhandle area.

Holley Navarre Senior Association
The votes are in and the Holley Navarre Senior Association (HNSA) membership selected the 2008 Executive Board to guide the association through another successful year. The winners are: Ginger Eisele, John Fletcher, Noella Hodgson, Mike Sandler, Nancy Sandler, and John Rodrigues (alternate), Treasurer Judy Ertl, and Secretary Carol Bloomer. The board selected a chairperson prior to the January general meeting. The association would not be successful without members taking on additional responsibility.
Many activities are planned for the new year. These activities include a dance, AARP Driver Safety Class, a social, tax forum, bunco marathon, legal clinic, Tai Chi class, founder's day, computer training, Election Day and the February general meeting.
At the January dance, attendees will dance to live music with Joe Occhipinti's Big Band on Saturday, Jan. 12 from 7:30 to 10 p.m. at the E.H. Pullum Senior Center, located at 8476 Gordon Goodin Lane in Navarre. Bring snacks for the food table. Soft drinks and punch will be provided. Tickets are on sale at the senior center office. The dance committee still needs volunteers. Even if you are not a dancer, please help promote the dance as well as other activities that are open to the public. AARP will offer a driver safety classroom refresher course for drivers aged 50 and over on Jan. 17 and 18 from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the senior center. Attendees must be there both days to complete the course. Learn defensive driving techniques, get an update on traffic laws, and find out how to adjust your driving to age related changes. Individuals may be eligible for a reduction on auto insurance. The cost is $10 per person and pre-registration is required. Sign up by calling Nancy Sandler at 850-939- 6973.
The Jan. 19 social, from 1 to 3 p.m. at the senior center, will include a bunco marathon. Don't worry if you don't know how to play bunco, many of the regulars don't know how to play either. There will be a Property Tax Forum on Jan. 22, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Holley-Navarre Middle School hosted by the Navarre Chamber.
The Legal Clinic is back on the fourth Wednesday of each month. This valuable service provides free wills, living wills, and powers of attorney to those 60 and over and has saved members thousands of dollars. Call the Northwest Florida Legal Service office anytime Monday through Friday at 850-432-2336 to be placed on the Navarre schedule.
Tai Chi is a Chinese exercise system that uses slow, smooth body movements to achieve a state of relaxation of both body and mind. Michael Loftis is offering a series of eight classes to learn the forms. The entire series will cost $50. You can participate in the first class and pay the fee if you wish to continue. Classes will start Tuesday, Feb. 5, from 3 to 5 p.m. There will be a sign up sheet on the door and classes will be capped at 10 students.
Beginner/refresher computer training is back in February. The date will be announced. The training is free to members and $5 for non-members. If you are a little rusty and need a review or just can't get your computer to do what you want it to do, then sign up. A Founder's Day celebration is being planned in March to mark 17 years as an association. HNSA wants to make it a big event. Anyone interested in being on the committee can sign up on the door. She will need lots of help to make this happen.
Jan. 29 is Election Day in Florida and federal elections are held at HNSA. In addition to the Presidential Primary, very important decisions will be made on property taxes. The center is a polling place and the old section of the building will be closed Jan. 29. Other Senior Center activities scheduled that day must be in Savage Hall and participants must enter through the South entrance. Consider early voting either at the county South Service Center in Midway, or the Supervisor of Elections office in Milton, Monday through Saturday, Jan. 14 through 26, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. For information call 850-983-1900.
The February general meeting will be held Feb. 1 at the senior center with guest speaker Dr. Matthew Rickett. He will present information that will help participants learn to take an active part in maintaining good health with wellness with prevention practices.
Gulf Breeze Historical Society
The Gulf Breeze Historical Society will meet at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 15 at the Gulf Breeze Library. The program will feature Betty Vickers, a well-known Northwest Florida historian. Betty Vickers has published articles on nursing and medical history and is currently co-writing a book with Marylou Ruud on the experiences of women in Pensacola and the Northwest Florida area during the depression in the1930's. Vickers' topic for the Gulf Breeze Historical Society will be "Early Pensacola 30's artists Eleanor King and Marion Howe." She will briefly discuss Pensacola artist Emma Chandler. AARP Driver Safety Classes
AARP Driver Safety Classes for 2008 are scheduled in Gulf Breeze at the Santa Rosa Recreation Center from 8:30am to 12:30 pm on the following dates: Jan. 23-24; Feb. 27-28; March 26-27; April 23- 24; May 21-22; September 24- 25; October 22-23; and Dec. 3- 4. The classes for June, July, and August have not been scheduled at this time.
The AARP Driver Safety classes are for people who are 50 and over. Insurance companies give a discount on auto insurance for people over 55 who have taken the course. The course is designed to help one understand the effects of aging on driving and to provide strategies to help compensate for those effects. The cost of the course is $10. You do not have to be a member of AARP to participate in the class. Call the Council on Aging at 850-432-1475 to register.
Emerald Coast Women's Club
Glen Frazier, a veteran of World War II and ex-POW for three years in the Philippines and Japan and a survivor of Bataan Death March, will be the special guest at the ECWC at Soundside at Hurlburt Field on Jan. 11, at 6 p.m. Peter Loss, who was in the same platoon as Frazier, will also be there. Tickets are $25. Hors d'oeuvres will be served and a cash bar is available.
Wide Angle Photo Club
The Wide Angle Photo Club (WAPC) invites the public to its January program on proper camera care.
Navarre resident Kenny Wilder will demonstrate the proper way to change lens on an SLR camera (digital or 35mm) and explain how and why sensors need cleaning. The presentation will be at 7 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 14, at ARC Gateway, located at 3908 North 10th Ave. in Pensacola.
The free lesson begins the new membership year for the local camera club, which is open to anyone in Northwest Florida, regardless of experience or type of camera used. Annual dues of $24 per person are now being collected. The club meets on the second Monday night of each month.
