Florida Tax Watch questions Midway proposal A representative for the Florida TaxWatch organization said Midway Fire District's proposed referendum, which has the potential to increase the district's funding by $1.8 million, is in conflict with the legislature's plan to decrease taxes. "That's not the intent of the legislature in property tax reform," Kurt Wenner, director of tax research for Florida TaxWatch, said. "It doesn't help that effort." He said that if voters approve the Additional $25,000 Homestead Exemption on Jan. 29, they stand to save, on average, $240 per year. If Midway's proposal passes, each residential unit will pay a flat $225 in fire tax. "It's about a wash for you guys," Wenner said, because the savings will be canceled out by the increase in fire tax. The referendum also provides for increases tied to the rise in Florida personal income for the past five years. "Generally, we have a problem with indexing taxes," Wenner said. "It takes people off the hook for justifying tax increases." Florida TaxWatch is a private, non-profit, non-partisan research institute that over its 25 year history has become widely recognized as the watchdog of citizens' tax dollars. |
