BY JOSH JURNOVOY Special to the News

The GBHS wresdtling team won the inaugural Andrews Invitational by 1.5 points Dec. 22 at Gulf Breeze. The Dolphins won four weight classes.
The Gulf Breeze Dolphin' wrestling team won the first annual Andrews Institute Christmas Invitational wrestling tournament at Gulf Breeze High on December 22.

It was the first tournament the Dolphin wrestling team hosted in their five-year history. Six other schools traveled to participate in the tournament including: Panama City Arnold, Bozeman, Choctawhatchee, Milton, Tate and South Walton. The Dolphins edged out Arnold 149.5-148, while Bozeman finished third with 147 points.

Arnold had six first place finishes in each of the six lightest weight classes and three more third place finishes. Gulf Breeze had four first place finishes and two of their wrestlers came in second in their respective weight classes.

In the 140 lb. weight class, Gulf Breeze senior wrestler Harrison Garret won his first ever varsity match by pinning his opponent at the 1:40 mark in the second round. Garret ended up finishing second in his class.

Tanner Eagley works on his opponent during the Andrews Invitational on Dec. 22. Eagley won the 145-pound weight class.
"That felt pretty good," said Garret, one of only three GBHS seniors to wrestle in the meet.

Junior Tanner Eagley took first place for the Dolphins in the 145 lb. weight class by pinning both of his opponents.

Eagley pinned his first opponent at the 1:12 mark but struggled a little with his opponent in the final round, Tate's Albert Lewis. Eagley was taken down twice by Lewis in the first period, but he quickly recovered to pin him at the 1:55 mark.

"I knew he was going to be quick," said Eagley of his opponent. "I just had to focus on getting him on his back and I was able to that."

Senior and co-captain Kyle Chavers also won first place for the Dolphins competing in the 160 lb. weight class. Chavers pinned his first opponent in 55 seconds, and he won his final match by technical fall, 19-3.

"I think I was a little sluggish today, and I could have wrestled better," said Chavers, who improved to a team-best 18-2 on the season. "I probably should have been able to pin him but overall I am just happy to get the win in only my second individual tournament."

Good advice Scott Behrens (left) listens to Rob Herman during a break in the Andrews Invitational. Herman, who now resides in Pensacola, is a former Olympic and Pan Am Games wrestling coach. As a wrestler, Herman was a four-time national champion and a World Cup Silver medalist.
Senior Erich Reitz took first in the 171 lb. class by pinning his only opponent at the 4:41 mark.

Junior wrestler Taylor Retherford won first place in the 189 weigh class by pinning his last two opponents. His toughest challenge came in his first round match against Choctaw's Robert Carrillo which he won in by decision 7-5.

Junior Jesse Parsons was impressive in the 215 lb. class as he pinned his first two opponents at the 53 second mark and 2:13 mark respectively. Parsons lost in the finals by decision 4-2.

After the final match, the Dolphins were not able to celebrate their victory right away as a flaw in the computer scoring system caused a discrepancy between its score and the human scorekeeper's results. The scorekeeping problem was resolved after nearly 45 minutes of waiting and the Dolphins were announced as the winners.

Waiting for an opening Stephen Houser plots his escape during the Andrews Invitational. Houser finished fourth in the 130 pound weight class.
"This program has been in the making five years and we were really excited to be able to put on this tournament to reward our friends and family for all of their support, and we hope to be able to continue and expand the tournament," head coach Matt Alt said.

"We are blessed to have the support of a great community that supports us like Gulf Breeze does...I think our guys played outstanding today and our experienced guys came through and our younger guys gained valuable experience that should help them in the future."
Right where I want him... Taylor Retherford (top) puts leverage on his opponent. Retherford was one of four weight class champions for GBHS.
