Girls soccer team begins quest for state title
Of all the sports Gulf Breeze High offers, soccer can be one of the most difficult to cover. Football, volleyball, basketball, baseball and softball, there's a lot of action - a lot of scoring. In a close game, a soccer story could read 'ooooh, they almost scored here, they almost scored there, Oh! They hit the post here...

Jekyll and Tide
Bama must find consistency to play for a title in 2008 The first BCS poll is out, and the Alabama Crimson Tide is ranked second. Alabama trails Texas and leads all others across the board in the polls and computers. It's hard to deny that Bama has a solid resume thus far. Inconsistent play, however, could end up costing the Tide a shot at a national title.

ALABAMA (#2)
It's the third Saturday in October, and that means UT comes calling. As we've seen thus far TM this season, it isn't wise to sleep on any opponent in the SEC. Nick Saban, however, is one of the best at keeping his teams focused and intense. Tennessee will not need any help with motivation after the humiliating 41-17 blowout last season.

AUBURN
Prior to the start of the season, tonight's game vs. West Virginia looked to be a contest of conference-title and possibly national-title contenders. Now it merely seems like a mediocre Thursday night game between two unspectacular teams.

FLORIDA (#10)
Florida fans are furious about their No. 10 ranking in the first ® BCS poll of the season. Well, the good news is that will certainly change if they win out. The Gator offense is tops in the conference in nearly every statistical category, and the defense is near the top in many. Still, with only one really good win to its credit, UF has a lot to prove.

GEORGIA (#7)
Georgia began its gauntlet of ranked opponents (Vandy, LSU and Florida) with an impressive 24-14 win last weekend. It now travels into one of the most intimidating places to play in the entire country. Over 91,000 screaming fans will be in attendance, two Top 15 teams square off and conferenceand national-championship lives are on the line Saturday afternoon!

LSU (#13)
LSU overcame a halftime deficit to defeat South Carolina. It cannot afford to play from behind against Georgia on Saturday. This seems like one of those games that will resemble a heavyweight bout, the two trading punches throughout. I'm sensing a "Mad Hatter" sighting late in the game.

FLORIDA STATE (#25)
After a 26-17 victory at N.C. State, FSU has cracked the Top 25 for the first time this season. With Wake Forest losing to ® Maryland, the Noles are one WF loss away from controlling their destiny in the Atlantic Division. FSU must first get by Virginia Tech, which is arguably its toughest opponent to date.

MIAMI
Miami is on its first winning streak of two games or more after defeating Duke last weekend. It will be interesting to see if the Hurricanes can keep their momentum against an equally inconsistent but also equally as capable Wake Forest team. Interceptions continue to be a major issue for the 'Canes offense. They survived Duke despite giving them three.

CENTRAL FLORIDA
UCF has had two weeks to prepare for the high-powered scoring machine that is the Tulsa offense. I'm afraid that it will not be nearly enough. The Knights will need to score points (and a lot of them) to beat the Hurricane. UCF ranks 109th in scoring, 112th in passing yards and 120th in total yards. The margin in this one could be astronomical as Tulsa averages 56.

SOUTH FLORIDA (#16)
The Bulls blasted Syracuse 45-13 and now turn their attention to Louisville. With DE George Selvie likely out of this one, USF will need others on the D-line to get pressure on the Cardinals' QB. As has been the Bulls' pattern for big games this year, expect this one to be a shootout.

SOUTHERN MISS
USM is on a four-game losing streak coming off a tough 45-40 loss to Rice last weekend. The Eagles are now 2-5, 0-3 and effectively out of the Conference USA race and on the brink of elimination from bowl eligibility. One of the few bright spots in the darkness is QB Austin Davis, who threw for a school-record 461 yards in the loss to Rice.
