Gulf Breeze theatre company to make debut
      The first professional theatre company in the area is being launched in Gulf Breeze this week with the production of "Footloose" by BETA Children's Theatre. The musical will run the next two weekends in the studio theatre at the University of West Florida.

Kearney: Property closing will happen
      Property in Gulf Breeze that has served as home to the Gulf Breeze Area Chamber of Commerce is owned by the Santa Rosa School District. No closing has been completed on its recent sale, even though the high bidders have been promising a closing for several months.

In heady company

SRC teachers ratify contract by 79-21 margin
      For the first time in many years, the teachers union has ratified its contract with the Santa Rosa County School District for the upcoming school year. The contract was approved 79 percent to 21 percent. "We usually have to start school without the new contract being finalized," Superintendent John Rogers said.

First day of school in area goes smoothly
      Santa Rosa County school officials said Monday's first day of classes for the 2008-09 year went well, the biggest complaint being some school buses either being late or missing some students. It was the first day of the school system's three-tier schedule plan, which staggered start and finish times rather drastically in some instances.

Early voting continues
      Early voting runs through Saturday, Aug. 23, at two locations in Santa Rosa County. Citizens can vote at the South Service Center at 5841 Gulf Breeze Parkway, or at the Elections Office at 6495 Caroline Street in Milton. Voting can be done between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. today, Friday and Saturday.

Zoo plans town hall meeting tonight
      The Zoo Northwest Florida will host a special town hall meeting for the public tonight (Thursday, Aug. 21) at 6 p.m. at 5701 Gulf Breeze Parkway. Danyelle Lantz, executive director of The Zoo, told county commissioners last week the meeting will inform the public of the zoo's financial status, review The Zoo's history, and show staff's vision for The Zoo's future.

Smaller parks await county appropriations
      Pending approval of the Santa Rosa County Commission, all neighborhood parks between Midway and Gulf Breeze will be getting some improvements soon. The District 5 Recreation Advisory Committee last week recommended to the commission more than $126,000 in improvements.

Snider appointed by Gov. Crist to PJC District Board of Trustees

Deadman's Island cleanup
      About 25-30 local volunteers converged on Deadman's Island on Saturday morning to clean up the historic barrier island north of Gulf Breeze. Hundreds of pounds of debris were removed, and approximately 600 plants were planted for reinforcement.

PJC college fair for SRC to be Sept. 9
      Gulf Breeze News Pensacola Junior College will partner with the Escambia and Santa Rosa county school districts to host College Fair 2008 on Sept. 8-9 at its Pensacola and Milton campuses. For Santa Rosa County students, the fair is 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 9, at the L.I.F.E. Center/Sports Complex, Building 4000, Milton campus, 5988 Highway 90.
