Richardson promoted to rank of sergeant
MILITARY
      U.S. Army Sgt. Benjamin A. Richardson was recently promoted by Lt. Col. Fishchel, U.S. Air Force, while serving his second deployment in Afghanistan. Richardson, a Gulf Breeze High School graduate, is with the 208th Finance Battalion from Mannheim, Germany, where he has been stationed since January 2004.

Watch for night-time lane closures on 98
BRIEFS
      Eastbound traffic on U.S. Highway 98 between Whisper Bay Boulevard and Crane Cove will encounter lane closures between 8 p.m. and 6 a.m. through next Thursday, Aug. 14, with the exception of Friday and Saturday night, Aug. 8-9.

20th Habitat home dedicated by church
      Gulf Breeze United Methodist Church, in partnership with Habitat for Humanity, on Saturday dedicated its 20th Habitat home at 1866 Justice Circle in Gulf Breeze. Volunteers from the church began landscaping the home at 8 a.m., followed by the dedication ceremony at 10.

Pedestrian deaths rise on U.S. 98
      A Gulf Breeze woman died last Thursday night, July 31, when she was struck by a vehicle as she crossed U.S. Highway 98 in Midway just west west of the State Road 399/East Bay Boulevard intersection. Rosa Mead, 47, died when she stepped into the path of a 1998 Jeep driven by Brian Winkler, 34, of Navarre at approximately 10:10 p.m.

GBPD honored 7th time in a row
      The Gulf Breeze Police Department (GBPD) earned the prestigious 2008 Rocky Pomerance Excellence in Policing Award by the Florida Police Chiefs Association. It marked the seventh consecutive year that the GBPD has been recognized as one of the best police agencies in Florida by the FPCA.

Surface runoff threatens county watershed areas
      The Santa Rosa County Public Works Department is installing signs in Gulf Breeze and other areas designating the boundaries of watershed areas in Santa Rosa County. The 41 signs are part of a grant received by the Bay Area Resource Council to raise public awareness about pollution to local watershed areas from surface runoff.

      The Gulf Breeze Optimist Club will install a new slate of officers and give out some awards Sept. 16 at St. Ann Catholic Church's Parish Hall. The Installation and Awards banquet will begin with a social hour at 6 p.m. followed by dinner.

Jail to increase capacity by 128
      Work will soon begin to add 128 more beds onto the Santa Rosa County Jail in Milton. And thanks to the county commissioners, there will be room for expansion to eventually bring the total additional beds to 640 in the future, if needed.

Search continues for escapees
      Authorities said a design flaw in the construction of a Santa Rosa County Jail cell led to the escape of two inmates Saturday, Aug. 2. Officials are searching for 43-year-old Ricky Dale Spears, and 20-year-old David Chapell Dixon. The pair turned up missing during a head count on Saturday night.

      Construction work on the Garcon Point Toll Plaza will take place today, Friday and Sunday, Aug. 10. Lane closures for northand south-bound traffic will be between 11p.m. and 6 a.m. There will be at least one plaza lane for north-bound traffic and one plaza lane for south-bound traffic open at all times.
